Are there any other users of beauty products who feel conflicted to be paleo, but to use non-paleo beauty products (ie hair products, nail polish, tooth whiteners)? I ask myself why I bother eating strict Whole30 compliant diet, but I'm not willing to give up my 'beauty' regimen. Does anyone else have this internal conflict?

We all have our concessions to modern civilization. I don't think that's anything to feel particularly guilty about. That said, if it does bother you, you can look for healthier (for you and the environment) alternatives to some of your beauty products. I use conventional shampoo and conditioner, but I use a deodorant crystal stick made from potassium alum instead of a product made with aluminum, and (perhaps TMI for guys) I use a reusable menstrual cup instead of tampons or pads. I don't use makeup very often, so my stock is fairly small and cheap, but something like the Bare Minerals products might be healthier than conventional cosmetics. |

I don't use anti perspirant but natural deoderant and sometimes a body spray. Otherwise I do basic makeup, but it's 'normal commercial stuff, non-paleo if you want to call it that. I don't dye my hair but that's more because I'm chicken, and it isn't all that gray yet. My husband likes it the way it is. Unless you feel like your beauty regimen is hurting your health, then leave the guilt behind. Nobody says you have to look like a cavewoman. If you can find more natural products to substitute, maybe the better, but do what works for you. |

Not particularly. I use Tom's of Maine deodorant (I would NOT recommend their new anti-perspirant, it was awful) and LUSH shampoo bars, conditioner, body wash, and soap. More natural, but not completely organic or anything. I do dye my hair with regular box stuff cause I think I am too pale for blonde hair and I want to cover up my grays, use mostly Bare Minerals makeup, and use 3-free nail polish. I don't feel a bit guilty about it. I don't dye that often, don't use nail polish or makeup everyday at this time, and I think the toxic load is greatly lessened compared to traditional, full chemical products. |

I've given this a lot of thought, and read quite a few blogs about switching to natural beauty regimens, but while I like to eat like a caveman I don't much care to look like one. I like my hair colored dark brown. I like eyeliner. I like experimenting with hairstyles that usually require some hair spray or pomade, which will have to be washed out. Plus, I'm busy. I work full time with a commute. I have a husband and a dog. To me, it's more important to spend time at home preparing good food for the whole family, for everyone's benefit. My husband and I have a lot of fun cooking up meals together. I'm not sure I could say the same for experimenting with natural deodorants. I suppose I could spend extra time on the weekends searching the web for paleo-friendly makeup and maybe attempt to create products of my own, but I personally choose to spend my time doing other things. It's a quality of life thing for me, so I abandoned the guilt long ago. |

If you like your routine, don't feel guilty about it! I use a heavy strength deodorant, wear eye make up, curl my eyelashes, sometimes wear foundation and use Revlon lipstain. And I'm huge on eyebrow maintenance and nail care, but not so big on filling in my brows or painting my nails. Natural, but very well maintained. But I also use argon oil for moisturizer, menstrual sponges, wash my hair twice a week and stopped dying my hair 5 years ago. |

I still color my hair (with organic products) and get mani/pedis regularly-- everything else in my life is "paleo-compliant": diet, exercise, sleep, stress, cleaning products, all other skin and haircare products other than the aforementioned hair color and nail polish, etc. I figure (or justify!) that since everything else is more or less optimal I'm allowed a vice or two. I also refuse to feel guilty for some indulgences and vanity-- we don't need to be perfect, we just need to do the best we can with what we've got :) |

I still color my hair, swim in my chlorinated pool, use soap, shampoo, and conditioner, shave my legs and pits, get a mani/pedi every month, and occasionally wear make-up. I've toyed with the idea of going no-poo, but am still too chicken, though I have noticed that since going Paleo, my scalp isn't the oil slick it used to be and can go longer between shampoos. |

Solution for bleaching teeth: My teeth lightened noticeably almost immediately after I started oil-pulling with coconut oil. Don't believe all the mumbo-jumbo regarding it "pulling" toxins out of the vein underneath your tongue. It's more likely that it reduces bacteria's ability to adhere to your teeth/mouth and swishes them out of the pockets between your gums and your teeth. Whitening effects are likely due to it being a nonpolar solvent, as opposed to mouthwash or tooth paste suspended in water, and swishing for 20 minutes instead of 30 seconds. It's unlikely to get you to blinding brilliance but if you accidentally swallow, it will be coconut oil in your tummy instead of tooth bleach. |

Since going paleo, I've found that I feel more comfortable without makeup. It makes getting ready in the morning so much faster. I sometimes use an eyelash curler or a bit of eyeliner, but besides that I generally go makeup-free. For makeup and other beauty care products I suggest looking up Aveda. It's a line of shampoo, makeup, and skin care products that use mostly natural ingredients. My hair salon sells them. While not everything is completely natural, they do their best to use plant-derived ingredients without sacrificing quality. Their shampoo is amazing and would make a great gift. Btw, I'm not trying to sell you anything, I just love their shampoo. I speak from experience (: |
