I think the expression "red meat" is amusing. In practice this pretty much only refers to cow products. Why dont people just say "beef" if thats what they mean?
Lamb is red, deer is red, moose is red, theres probably a load of other red coloured meats. Some of those like venison, are quite low in fats.
There is so much misinformation regarding red meat, mostly fat phobia. I've also heard some people seem to think red meat doesn't digest properly and just rots in your stomach. serious.
my grandfather said the reason he had lived to 90 was because he didn't eat red meat- for him pork was red meat, for others is isn't.
I think most who say they don't eat red meat mean, they only eat poultry and fish.
I also think the phrase, then the practice arose as a result of bad science and even worse media sensationalism
I just wrote about it last night,in my summary of the ethics and science of eating red meat http://www.paleoasis.com/2012/07/to-eat-or-not-to-eat-red-meat.html
I didn't eat it for 15 years, because I was young and impressionable when the nutrition advice was that red meat was bad for people - it would cause cancer, it made people fat, etc. So I let that infiltrate my mind and stopped eating it for 15 years. So happy to be eating it again!
Most people who don't eat it do so because of ingrained stereotypes about red meat being unhealthy. They subcontiously lose a taste for it. My mother did that, even now that she is paleo, she almost never eats beef. And sadly to, because good grass fed red meat is a nutritios powerhouse to even the best pastured chickens out there. Ruminants are better and converting nutrients and storing them in the meat and fat than are birds.
Because cows have cute faces and adorable big brown eyes and they moo like they mean it?
Not saying it's a good reason, but I know many people who won't eat them because they're cute. I say, "Cute AND delicious!" I personally won't eat any animal that I'm not willing to kill myself. So far, life has been tasty.
