Do you have any stories of reversing cavity or tooth decay? Or of foods which improve your vision?

Oooo I can put in for this ! My son has terrible teeth issues - fillings and teeth removed - he went paleo about 3 months ago ( has carbs through veg and such but not 100% - but he is only 10!) anyway when he started a filling fell out - I left it go for a few months to see what would happen and took him back last wk - did not tell the dentist what we were doing. He said it does not need filling its healing! WOW So he has the odd bit of fruit - and I cant really control the sweets outside of home - I am sure he indulges but not to the extent he use to. Eyes I cant help you with - mine are still going the wrong way! |

Retinol for your eyes. Vitamin A that's already been converted from Beta Carotene. Your body doesn't convert beta carotene well. Found in Fish Oil, Liver, Healthy Ruminants(grassfed moocow) and in eyes(whole sardines etc), egg yolks |

Avoiding blood sugar issues and sugars in general are good for both. Sugar feeds mouth disease and sugar in the blood is known to contribute to cataracts in the eyes and overall eye damage. Ask any diabetic about that one! As for vitamins that protect the eye, ask a different doctor and you will get a different list. Things like vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, magnesium, niacin, etc have all been named as important. I have personally not noticed any obvious change in my eyesight from eating paleo though. As for teeth, many people feel that swishing the mouth with oil (aka oil pulling) may help with bacterial control, tartar buildup, and gum health. In ancient times, eating a lot of meat and animal fat without much sugar would have accomplished the same thing. Those populations who eat very little sugar and more fat tend to have very healthy teeth and gums. I would say also from a personal perspective that maintaining decent intake of calcium and magnesium can be important for prevention of transparent teeth. |

Yup, cut down on carbs. Also, I've heard from others and have had some experience that suggests that fats like butter and coconut oil help at least with gum health. I've had gum inflammation and bleeding for a long time- had to do constant flossing and swishing with Listerine to keep it under control. Since going paleo that's gone away, but if I have to much fruit, or if I'm tempted to eat my mother-in-law's red cooked pork (stewed with soy sauce and sugar). As for the eyes, this is completely speculative, but I wonder if running/moving quickly in a complex environment provides training for the eyes. I find when I'm running barefoot I naturally "zoom in" on anything that might hurt my feet on the ground. No idea if this can actually improve your vision. Just tossin' that out there. |

And avoiding grains; they hinder mineral absorption. |

Eggs contain, among a lot of other cool stuff, Cholin and Zeaxanthin, both good for your eyes. Tooth decay: Read Price's "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" - or ditch sugar, white flour, excessive fructose etc. Price actually describes that the teeth are able to make up for some damage caused by bad nutrition (both too many carbs and too few minerals). Still, a cavity is a cavity. |

I'm work in an optometrist (eye doctor) office. Dust, wind, and UV sunlight are associated with pinguecula and ptergyium (similar to the pinguecula) but grow further in. Sunglasses outdoors are the recommendation. I see them frequently in patients who live near the equator and tropics (who don't wear sunglasses). I don't know of any dietary intervention but an anti-inflammatory diet can only help - it certainly won't hurt. People take steroid eyedrops for temporary flares. For eye conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts a Paleo diet is great! High lutein and zeaxanthin pigments are found in eggs, and green leafy veggies (esp.kale and spinach) and sweet potatoes are associated with lower AMD and dementia. Supplementation even helps those on SAD but Paleo is far superior. These pigments are found in the brain and decline with age unless people eat Paleo-like. Also fish oil and good omega 3 balance helps with AMD (age-related macular degeneration). Cataracts come at an earlier age and are more severe in diabetics and those eyes exposed to a lot of sunlight and UV (again more common in the tropics and equator). A Paleo diet keeps blood sugars stable so perhaps many Paleos will delay, if not prevent cataracts. I recommend sunglasses to everyone outdoors including bright winter days when the sun can reflect off the snow and cause snow blindness (that's why skiers wear sunglasses)!
