I cooked with coconut oil before with no problem, last night I had a spoonful of coconut oil. A few hours later I felt nauseous and this morning I feel worse. I feel like I have to throw up but I cant. Any reason or advice? Thank you

I have definitely gotten nauseous (wanting to throw up, etc.) from eating a spoonful of coconut oil. There will be some discomfort, but it should pass. |

This thread was a revelation to me: http://paleohacks.com/questions/114930/responding-badly-to-coconut-oil-and-butter
I was actually trying to eat the stuff anyway, because it is supposed to be so good for you. |

It's best to eat straight coconut oil off of a spoon on an empty stomach from my experience. People should remember that 1 coconut has the equivalent of 3-4 tablespoons of oil. So eating more than that wouldn't be great( if using to cook you can use more if you want). I find that when you are new to eating coconut oil straight, it tends to make you nauseous. Maybe it is due to the fact it has immune enhancing properties{and the anti viral(due to lauric acid that I beleive gets turned into monolaurin), anti fungal, anti bacterial properties), that it is a bit strong if you go too fast and hard with the "dose". If you eat it with food, it can cause diahrrea and/or nausea/vomiting(this is from experience). Try just a little teaspoon at a time and work your way up. |

Just eat it with food. The body isn't used to handling pure fat like that. |

Sally Fallon was asked this question in one of the Underground Wellness podcasts. She said that you need to train your body to get used to so much fat. She recommends that you start with only a teaspoon or so before a meal and work your way up. |

coconut oil is also an anti-candida (yeast) as well as an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. maybe the "flora" in your gut is a little off or shocked by the properties of the coconut oil. i would start your consumption at a smaller amount and see if that effects you. coconut oil has done wonders for me- my skin, hair, health, and blood work are all phenomenal compared to before paleo |

Your body will start detoxifying from the coconut oil which means it is doing its job. Remember that coconut oil makes you nauseated but you rarely throw up from it. |
