So...is anyone here into hypothetical thinking about doomsday / armageddon scenarios? This is admittedly not the most helpful hack, but bear with me (or vote to close!).

Survivalism
How good are you at surviving without electricity? Catching your own food? Fighting zombies?

The hidden danger of weight loss?
Imagine that you spent the last year losing a ton of weight. Like 50 pounds, or even more, which isn't a stretch for some people on here. If there was a famine (unlikely) or the food or water supply was made toxic/tainted/whatever (a little more likely?) or there was a nuclear winter (ack!) then you would for once in your life potentially benefit from some extra fat as energy stores. What a bummer.

Emergency food storage
Some people have emergency stores of dried and well-preserved foods. Anyone here do that, and if so, how "paleo" is the food? I always thought it was kooky to have large stores of food in your basement in case of mega-emergency, but it's not that illogical now that I think about it. After all, much/most of my food is refrigerated and frozen, and wouldn't last more than a week. As to the chances of a doomsday scenario...I guess it depends on how risk averse you are.

Well, that's all the kooky angles I can think of at the moment. Has anyone else thought about these things, even just to pass the time before 5pm?

Did you see the article in the recent Outside Magazine about preppers? Crazy stuff. – Karen P. Jul 11 at 21:19
Haha your post is getting so many votes, NICE! – Rob Jul 11 at 22:21
Kamal, were you on vacation during my posts? Prepping the bunker? :) – Lyndsay Jul 11 at 22:45

I'm really good at fighting zombies. You have to think like a zombie to fight teh zombies and I can think like a zombie.

But you have to practice. Someone says brains. You say

  1. Eww
  2. Yum!
  3. Aaaaaarrrrgggg (yum yum)

WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE? o_o

But I most likely would be dead due to lack of body fat or survival skills. Unless I stole someone's food. But I'm too nice to do that. So I would be dead.

LOL, I address this in this question: paleohacks.com/questions/115801/… – Lyndsay Jul 11 at 21:51

I obviously do, since I asked this question, found here: http://paleohacks.com/questions/131562/paleo-bomb-shelter/131622#131622

Oooh boy, I just searched for "survival" on here, and the question has quite a lineage, tracing back to the ancient (~2 yr) origins of paleohacks! – Kamal Jul 11 at 23:26
Ancient times! We've made it so far, baby! – Lyndsay Jul 11 at 23:31

In a world gone mad, in a universe where nothing is as it was, one man dared to ask the only question that mattered: When the day of reckoning is upon you, where will you go to ask total strangers to diagnose your dissatisfaction with the quality of your poop?

Learning to hunt has been on my to-do list for quite some time now, and I think that would be an essential skill to have in an apocalypse, none less than a zombie outbreak. Not that I lose sleep over this, but it has often occurred to me that we humans are far too reliant on the lights coming on when you flick a switch, drinking water gushing out of a tap when you turn it and slices of animals being stocked on shelves in shops.

I see survival skills in the same light as knowing first aid and CPR, kinda nice to know you can do something if you really have to.

Love this post! Actually, I think we are better prepared for such a sceanrio. Adventurous in food, we should be better able to handle a doomsday scenario while everyone else is looking through the local stores to find food...we will be ready to take to the woods and make the most of it.

I know we have enough squirrels and rabbits running around in our yard and the woods behind us to feed us for several years (joking on the quantity, but sometimes it feels like it).

We have several of those "humane" traps...keeps them alive long enough for me to cook em!
