I encountered these at the cafeteria at work and thought "Wow, a Paleo/Primal brand." Then I read the ingredients. These guys should change the name of their product. What do you think?
I like how they feel that they need to go out of their way to rename gluten as "wheat protein".
The sad thing to me is how far this is from "whole foods." It's like, if you want a snack, eat an orange... Vegetarianism or veganism as concepts don't really bother me, except when they're invoked to support this sort of industrially concocted ersatz food. I remember vegetarians in college who'd go to McDonalds and order a hamburger with fries and a coke, and ask for no patty, and pat themselves on the back for "eating healthy," because, doncha know, the french fries were fried in vegetable oil and not that unhealthy beef tallow. le sigh.
Obviously they are called "Primal Strips" because they are meant to simulate beef jerky and provide an easily transportable source of vegan protein. vegan's know it is vegan because they are the ones the product is marketed towards. IF they didn't know it was vegan, the company would be out of business and we would not see them at every whole foods/natural foods store.
Also, it's not false marketing, like you guys have stated. False marketing would be " Beef Jerky." That's like trying to sue the company that makes the "Magic Bullet" because you bought a blender and found out it had nothing to do with magic or bullets, let alone the two of them. OR like buying a box of "Beggin' Strips" and eating them, only to find out they're actually dog food and you didn't read the whole label.
Do you think Sisson's "Primal Fuel" meets primal standard? Last time I checked maltodextrin came from corn which is the off limits, sugar contains fructose which damages your liver, and guar gum comes from a bean, which is also off limits (except coffee, of course, because where else are you going to get your stamina from when your glycogen depleted and adrenal exhausted?). Oh, but you can always just take "take therapeutic amounts of testosterone...to balance out high levels of cortisol."
But yes, the ingredients look horrendous I would never let that thing go near my mouth, even if I were I vegan.
