I'm currently watching "The Men Who Made Us Fat" (BBC2) with my mum and it suddenly struck me how these "fatty, sugary foods" are all called "fattening".

Undoubtedly within the human brain (for most people, who don't know the facts) this strengthens the association of "fat makes you fat", so why don't/hasn't we/somebody try rebranding edible fat?

Much like molten rock under the earth's surface is magma, and above the surface is lava?

So true. We miss the point sometimes that fructose is more a "fat" than a "carb" because of semantics. – RaiseFitness Jul 12 at 20:41
Good way of approaching it – Alvaro Jul 12 at 21:05
A good question, but already asked recently: paleohacks.com/questions/129268/… – Mscott Jul 12 at 21:12
Ah apologies, I only discovered this site a few days ago and haven't been through the archives extensively! – Oz Jul 12 at 21:14
The molten center of a lava cake is a mixture of sugar and fat. Which one makes you fat? The 500 calories of fat or the 200 calories of sugar? As I understand it the glycemic shot of sugar herds the fat right into the adipose. If you sit down and watch TV or play video games the fat stays where it's parked. If you work out it reenters the bloodstream and heads to the muscle cells to be metabolized. Hence the fat makes you fat in the presence of the carbs unless you do something. – thhq Jul 13 at 2:39

Yea I watched that, so frustrating. I know how to cure the obesity epidemic, make all the food zero sugar and high fat and stop lying to everyone!!

That wouldn't fix the problem. Not all carbs are evil, and not all fats are good. Be careful getting into those assumptions. – RaiseFitness Jul 12 at 23:35
saturated fat not transfat – HuntingBears Jul 13 at 8:03

Someone on here once suggested lipid. I personally like blobby, or blob for body fat and this is how I refer to mine. :-)

+1000! Let's rename them to "Awesome Lipids!" :) – raydawg Jul 13 at 15:13

Exactly as I said in the former post on this, "the 2 words make me think eating fat will make me fat. So instead, I like to now call dietary "goodness"... yum!"

I had a very similar idea recently!

No -- Renaming/ Re-branding is not the answer. Education is the answer. What we need to do is educate people that the fat we eat is not necessarily the fat we store.

I've changed my mind.... It's not like we call all protein muscle. Of course we get protein from all sorts of things that are not muscle. Just like Fat!! So then what do we call it? I think instead of changing the dietary name, let's change the "junk on our trunk". Instead of body fat, let's call it body Carbs.. or Body Wheat... – CD Jul 16 at 0:07

I recommend we call eating fat "being awesome."

I eat awesome, like, three times a day.

I got in shape by eating awesome.

MMmmm, this bacon is full of awesome.

Man, pass me some of that awesome filled avocado

Then we can call fat on your body, shit.

I have a lot of shit I need to get rid of.

Mafuta - Swahili for fat

Mast - Croation for fat

Tuk - Czech for fat

Rasva - Finnish for fat

Mact - Serbian for fat

Mafuta sounds good. "I'm going to have a steak with extra mafuta for supper." I like it.
