Hello, I'm very skinny 5'4 barely 100 lbs I have PCOS and never got a natural period since I was 16 the only way was to take birth control pills and all of those garbage. After I found out how dangerous these medicine are to your body I turned to alternative medicines (herbs etc) which helped but I still wanted to balanced my own body naturally and be a real woman, getting period on my own etc..so I came across Paleo diet thanks to my superb support PCOS group (soulcysters.com) I tried it for 30 days and BOOM withing 45 days it finally happened ME I finally had a natural period with no herbs meds etc..just changing my diet did the trick so I will FOREVER be thankful to Paleo this is the way to go and live!! However, I'm losing weight (obviously because of different eating habits) and I really want to gain weight because I look like a skeleton and I really hate it and people are starting to ask if Im anorexic or something... I tried to incorporate milk in my diet but it upsets my stomach, I really enjoy the benefits of being healthy and feeling great everyday but I just really am not happy with how I look. I started to included a smoothie every morning that consist of coconut milk and fruits including bananas but I know I need to eat more caloric stuff then that but I still want to be within Paleo. Please help!!
I would not recommend adding an excessive amounts of nuts or refined sugar. Perhaps loading up on the butter/ghee, full fat coconut products, sweet potatoes (or any potatoes), fruit, etc would be more prudent.
The calories should be upped, trish. As much as you can. But what's probably more important is to eat more sugar, from fruits but also, if you want, from pure sugar (or coconut sugar, or honey, if you think that's more healthy). The milk would be the most interesting thing to add, of course. Have you tried cheese?
You need calorie dense foods, so you should focus on adding fat to your meals. Cook with lots of butter, eat lots of nuts (very calorie dense), dark chocolate, and eat starchy carbs, like sweet potatoes or white potatoes with plenty of fat. Don't eat sugar. Have fun :-)
I would suggest lifting some weights in conjunction with upping your caloric intake. If you gain weight while not using an exercise program, it will likely be body fat rather than muscle mass. You will end up looking soft and squishy. Even by adding a little bit of muscle, you will likely not look as skeletal.
Okay give me a day of what you are eating. Pack in nuts, dense carbohydrates like sweet potato, and lots of fruit! You could eat dates (with no sugar) to really spike it! but tell me a day of eating and I can improve my answer.
Yucca is very starchy and delicious. I tried the baked Yucca from Chris Kresser and they were very good. Plantains are also great. You can cook them green and fry them to make tostones or boil and mash like potatoes. My mom used to served the mashed ones with sauted onions on top, yumm! If you wait for the plantains to get dark and soft then you can make sweet plantains. I usually just pan fry them in a little oil and they are great. Have you considered white rice. Some paleo people like Chris Kresser and the book "The Perfect Health Diet" say that white rice is OK. When I cook the rice I add 1/4 cup of butter to the pot and saute the rice (2 cups) in the butter before adding the water (3 cups). Bring to a boil and then simmer covered for 15 minutes and then let it sit covered for 15 minutes. I guess the key to gaining weight is eating very starchy food with lots of fat.
Oh my thank you all for such great responses. I guess I just thought you have to stay away from sugar for paleo which is why I only ate fruits but I will definitely add dates to my regimen. As far as butter I thought that was not allowed. I will definitely try yucca. Plantains I eat I guess I will try to eat more of it and maybe daily. I do eat a lot of sweet potatoes actually almost every day. I eat them fried, boiled and mashed. I thought white potatoes was a no no in paleo?! Ok here is a typical day for me. Morning I eat a piece of meat with my homemade fruit smoothie which is made of bananas, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and coconut milk. Snack I eat few almonds. Lunch can be pork chop with spaghetti squash and a salad. Snack grapes. Dinner sweet potatoes with steak and veggies broccoli, carrots and celery. Drink will be the rest of my smoothie. That's pretty much a typical paleo day for me. Please feel free to adjust it so that I can finally gain some healthy weight. Ooh I almost forgot I also started on eating these protein larabar choco brownie ones hmmm sooo good but I don't think I gained any weight :-(
Hi! I'm in kind of the same boat, a thin female trying to gain weight. Do you eat eggs? Try adding lots of eggs, just make sure they are organic. And how much meat do you eat? There's a big difference between having 4oz of steak for dinner and eating a big fatty piece of meat. One of the things I'm trying to do is forget my notion of what a meal portion looks like, and just eat as much as I can. Strength training is important too. Paleo diet has been wonderful for my mood and energy levels, but yeah it's hard to gain weight!! Try tracking your food on something like this: http://paleotrack.com/ That can help you see how much you are really eating! I know how hard it is, trust me, I've been struggling with this for years. But I have faith!! Good luck!!
