My wife just came home from her 'gathering trip' (went to the store) and brought back my requested avacados. How do I store uncut avacados and how long can I store them. I usually buy them and put them in something. I find they go really well as a substitute for mayo in tuna wraps. HELP ME! I have never had any to store!

Once they ripen, in the produce drawer in your fridge. once cut, keep the side with the pit on in a plastic bag, the pit prevents the flesh from turning dark – Alvaro Jul 15 at 13:29
The pit only prevents the flesh covered by the pit from turning dark. IME the surface still turns brown. Sprinkle some lime juice on them. A lime-rich guacamole keeps better than a regular halved avocado in the fridge. But airtight seals help always. – Dan Jul 15 at 15:11

They should be soft to the touch and give a little with a gentle squeeze. If they are hard leave them out at room temp until they ripen. If they are ripe I would place them in the fridge.

Awesome, thank you for such a clear answer. That helps a lot. Seriously had no idea how to store an avacado. – SCUBABry Jul 15 at 13:14
Also, if you have unripened avocados and need them to ripen quickly, put them in a paper bag with an apple or two, roll the top down, and store in a dark cupboard overnight. Works like a charm! – MathGirl72 Jul 15 at 16:42

I know you didn't ask this but once you cut them, if you have a Foodsaver you can vacuum seal a half avocado (I leave the pit in) and it will keep for a couple of weeks in the fridge. I'm not a huge avocado fan so I use them sparingly and this works well for me.

I buy a dozen or so avocados when they are on sale at Aldi (Price match at Walmart to get the giant ones for Aldi price!) then I store them in the bottom drawer of the fridge in one of the "As seen on TV, green bags" They will stay fresh for 6 weeks or longer. I just take one out of the green bag and set it out to ripen. I save a lot of $$ by buying them in bulk when on sale and storing in green bags.

No Aldi and Walmart scares me. But our local grocery store does have some pretty competitive prices on the avocados. The price difference would not be worth the gas to drive farther. I love your hint on the green bags though. We have an As Seen on TV store in our mall. I will pop by and pick some up. – SCUBABry Jul 15 at 23:18

Squeeze on a bunch of lime. It also makes it tasty and wrap in foil and put in fridge (or in Tupperware). Next time your at the store look for an avocado storer. It stores a half of an avocado. I love it!

Oops read that as peeled. As far as unpeeled keep it in fridge until outside is soft. If firm I just leave it out for a day. – YoungPaleoLover Jul 15 at 19:44
