Recently all the evidence has been pointing to coffee as bad for my stomach and increasing my cold sore recurrence but I cannot (will not) give it up.
One of my greatest joys in life has been bulletproof coffee for breakfast most days but I wonder at what point I will have to accept that the pain simply isn't worth it and have to start drinking chickory or some other depressing psedo-coffee drink.
What is your no-give up food/drink?
It's 1,000% non-Paleo and going to kill me, but I have a job I hate with a passion, and need to distract myself from my work with some other kind of stimulation - between Crystal Lite and candy, I'll go for the least bad option.
Also artificial sweeteners of all kinds and caffeine pills. You will pry my caffeine pills from my cold, dead hands.
Just coffee. The intestinal duress for me is just a more "urgent" onset of my morning latrine-break anyway... Step 1 - Drink Coffee, Step 2 - Go Poo. Occasionally I'll also drink Yerba Mate or green tea, and sometimes I drink Yogi Bedtime tea if I'm particularly troubled or anticipate a sleepness night.
Coffee hasn't affected me in a way I would describe as negative.
And for what it's worth - I don't drink Bulletproof coffee, the brand or the style. I drink black coffee, and I pick the best beans that are on sale (anything between Starbucks, Peets, or 8-o-clock columbian). I make all my coffee in a French Press and I drink about 20oz a day or so (two large cups).
I used to drink 2-6 cans of Diet Dr Pepper everyday. I HAD to have one when I woke up in the morning. Felt wrong and would go to great lengths to not run out-late night grocery store runs for the next AM, family & friends would have it for me in their fridge's, etc. I had been doing this for over 20years. I would bring stash cans with me everywhere I went. I NEEDED my DDP to function, despite my boyfriend's 6year nagging to quit.
Then during a lowcarb stint a couple of months ago, I read that fake sweeteners can stall ketosis for some people. I was quite miserable doing VLC and decided to ditch the DDP since I was already limiting myself so much in other food choices, plus I knew the DDP was bad.
I cut back a can a day, and then just quit. I did however buy some sparkling mineral water in cans to help replace that carbonated-cold-can-feeling. I haven't even missed it. I can't believe how easy it was. I also started drinking tea for the caffeine boost that I thought I would miss but now only do that randomly. I think most people wouldn't miss caffeine at all if they are doing paleo and sleeping well. It is more like a mental habit/addiction. I would know because everyone I know is DUMBFOUNDED that I quit my DDP addiction.
Just offering this up for encouragement for everyone that quitting the caffeine probably won't be so hard like you think it will be. BTW, I feel much better not drinking diet soda.
My biggest "vice" is sugarless, chemical-laden chewing gum. One look at the ingredient list makes me want to hurl, but then I pop a piece in my mouth anyway. I've tried to ween myself by chewing on mint leaves, but I'm not there yet.
Alcohol, along with whatever artificially sweetened chaser goes with it (unless I'm drinking wine, of course, but I usually prefer vodka).
Coffee. I've finally gotten used to drinking it black, though.
Dark chocolate and nuts. I only include these because I don't know how well they work for my body - not saying they're harmful for everyone. I also have portion control problems, so that probably has something to do with it.
Coffee and tea. I keep thinking I'll give them up, but every day I wake up and it's all I want. I know that I'm consuming too much heavy cream with them, too. I really wish I was a half measures kind of person.
I wonder if you cold brewed the coffee, if it would be better on your stomach? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold-brew_coffee
