How much coconut oil should one be ingesting a day? I try to get a few teaspoons in, but the more I read I wonder if that is enough.
I love coconut oil, and use it for baking, skincare, but wonder if there is a threshold where too much may in fact be detrimental to ones health?
One article I read suggested 3 tablespoons a day... That sounds excessive to me.
The amount that makes you feel "I've eaten enough coconut oil now, I don't feel like eating any more" (which hopefully occurs a couple of spoonfull before "bbllleeuuurgghhh, I've eaten to much coconut oil and I'm going to vom"
Paleo is all about listening to the signals from your body, and eating what your appetite tells you to eat, and eating when it tells you to eat it.
In the absence of sugar rushes, your appetite is finely tuned to tell you how much protein you need, I'm sure the same is true of fat.
I typically ingest about 3 tablespoons a day just by eating out of the jar. Counting what I cook with, it could be more. I haven't had any issues taking that much except at first while my body was getting used to the extra fat.
I'm not sure what amount would be considered detrimental, but 3 tablespoons seems okay to me if you don't suffer any ill effects.
I consume stakes of the stuff, make sure its raw to get the benifit (low temp production). I mix it with honey and Carab to make a delicious raw treat. My family (3 of us, one 7 year old) gets through about 1 litre a week. If we cook we use coconut oil. Recently I had my blood work down and my LDL etc were all fantastic. I also use it for deoderent (mixed with Arrow), and 'Pull Oil' but putting a teaspoons worth in my mouth and swilling it around for 15 minutes. Recent research shows cocnut oil mixed with digestive enzymes kills bad bacteria. Coconut oil is wonderful, so much so I want to own a coconut farm!
If you aren't allergic, eat as much as you want. I mean, you need to get enough nutrition from other foods, but I've read of people eating ridiculous amounts of the stuff. Now I tried this, but I am allergic, and two tablespoons was enough to get me sick to my stomach. I could eat less, but it would cause skin flaking between my eyes that I didn't realize was from coconut oil until someone came onto PH asking about it. This n=1 stuff isn't as easy as people think. I don't know why it didn't dawn on me earlier.
Take it in small amounts at first and see if it helps your skin. Gradually increase from 1 to 2,3 tblspoons to see how it affects your results. Keep in mind every tbspoon has about 130 calories. It would be wise not to go much higher than a few tbspoons to not increase significantly your overall caloric intake. How much coconut oil depends on several factors. You could probably take more if you don't have that much fat in your diet. Also, your body might respond better to more fats or less. In order to aid digestion, I would recommend spacing out several spoonfuls throughout the day. So, take these into consideration and the answer to your question is "it depends".
