I've always had a "nervous stomach" that when stressed would send me to the bathroom repeatedly. I've done a lot in the past year to help improve my gut, but sometimes the stress just gets you.

During those times, I know there are things I can do to help deal with stress, but most are incompatible with not being able to leave the bathroom.

So in those cases, would it be reasonable to take Pepto to stop the diarrhea, or is it somehow going to mess with my already fragile gut ecosystem? Any better suggestions? What do you guys think?

If you take too much, your tongue will turn black. – MiMintzer Jul 24 at 19:46
LOL, don't I know it. I switched to the tablets (swalloable not chewable) a few years back. Easier to transport and they don't have that same issue. – Kelly Jul 24 at 21:06

Personally, I've had very good success in treating diarrhea with saccharomyces boulardii.

I was reading in The Pill Book Guide to Natural Medicines that bismuth subcitrate is superior to bismuth subsalicylate (i.e. Pepto). It says:

However, bismuth subcitrate has produced the best results against H. pylori and in the treatment of non-ulcer-related indigestion as well as peptic ulcers.

I figure you'd kind of fall under "non-ulcer-related indigestion".

I haven't had the best of luck finding bismuth subcitrate, but I figure I'd mention it in case you had better luck. Although I will say the book also says not to use bismuth preparations for more than 2 days to control diarrhea unless prescribed by a doctor.

But I am not aware of any reason that it should do damage to your gut flora. That doesn't mean there isn't one, however.

Go to a chiropractor.

Um, how does that help when I can't leave the house? – Kelly Jul 22 at 15:17
thanks whoever, for the minus votes, i get them all the time. Folks just don't like to think outside the box. Kelly, chiropractors have bathrooms. You are welcome to use them. Sorry, for the sarcasm, but I'm tired of the crap comments I get all over this site. Your nerves may be overstimulated, hyperactive, and patterned this way from a life time of stress and injuries. Chiropractic works. – Lisa Jul 22 at 20:11
Your advice, had you included that additonal explanation, would be helpful on a long-term basis. But I am looking for suggestons for short-term acute situations. – Kelly Jul 24 at 21:07
