I apologize if this has already been asked, but I couldn't come up with it in a search. I have never been hungry for breakfast my whole life. Any attempts to eat in the morning leave me nauseous. However, I wake up at 6am and by 11am, my tummy is growling up a storm (it is loud and embarrassing). I don't necessarily want to force breakfast on myself, but does anyone have any idea as to why I would naturally not be hungry in the morning? I used to think it was my coffee consumption, but my long stints without coffee didn't change anything.

Out of curiosity (and ignore me if you don't want to share), what is your body weight situation? How constant has it been? Many ups and downs? – Marcy Jul 22 at 15:44
I am 5'3 and 120 lbs. My weight fluctuates between 115 and 120. The absolute highest I have been is near 130lbs (when I was vegan/vegetarian, lol). I am a celiac and recovering alcoholic. – Lyndsay Jul 22 at 15:47

This is completely anecdotal, but I have always noticed that many people who don't eat breakfast tend to be on the thinner side, which runs contrary to the whole Eat a Big Breakfast thing (which has been previously debunked here). I wonder if it has something to do with you having more stable blood glucose levels so you don't wake up to instant hunger? Or if residual melatonin levels when you wake up have an appetite suppressant effect? I've also never been a breakfast person and have been about the same weight for my whole life (excluding the insanity that was first year of college). – Marcy Jul 22 at 16:00

If I didn't have to work, I would try to squeeze that in, maybe throw-up, then eat a nice lunch, lol! – Lyndsay Jul 22 at 16:25

That's awesome about your sister. I was a slender (though mushy and unhealthy in all other senses) heavy drinker for a long time. My little brother eats a ton of candy every day and is very lean and muscular. His twin, who eats very healthy by conventional standards, gains weight so easily and gets very frustrated at the candy eater. I really do mean this, but it is just unfair. I'll keep an eye on this thread - interested to see if someone can explain the hormonal reason behind a physical aversion to breakfast. – Marcy Jul 22 at 16:25

What time do you stop eating in the evenings. If I eat a lighter or earlier dinner, I am more hungry when I wake up. If I eat later or a heavier meal, I can go a couple hours in the morning before I start feeling ravenous. I think this may be partly due to delayed gastric emptying as a result of a prior eating disorder.

I eat dinner at about 7pm. Or, I skip dinner, if I've had a late lunch. – Lyndsay Jul 22 at 18:38

For breakfast I have 4 prunes and a handful of nuts just for some substance :) maybe your are still full from your evening meal?

You must be very "regular" :) – Lyndsay Jul 22 at 16:30

I never used to eat breakfast, then I started the first time was hard. However, then I started waking up in the morning and I would be hungry.

I never used to eat post workout, it was hard for me to eat something. Then I started and forced my body to adapt. Then After I finished a workout I was hungry.

Your body adapts to the demands you place upon it, if you do not eat in the morning then why would your body be ready for food?

I'm not on board with a lot of the eat when your hungry, I guess I just worked with to many people who toss the "why can't I get stronger, faster or my recovery sucks" and they are not eating enough food to function let alone improve athletically. Just my 2 cents.

Interesting thoughts on adaption. I haven't been hungry for breakfast, even as a little kid. My family ate big country breakfasts and I couldn't eat it, bleh! – Lyndsay Jul 22 at 16:11

If you aren't hungry, then don't eat. I very rarely eat breakfast. If by 11am you get hungry, then eat. There is no need to eat when your body isn't telling you to. You sound like you are well within a healthy weight range. Doesn't sound like you need to change what you are doing. Is there a reason you want to eat breakfast?

Did you read my post? I explicitly said that I do not want to force breakfast on myself. – Lyndsay Jul 22 at 16:10
I read it, that is why I was wondering why you were asking the question. Sorry I came across the wrong way. – RaiseFitness Jul 22 at 16:17
No worries, I'm just pondering the scientific, biological reasons why I'm not hungry and others are VERY hungry for breakfast! – Lyndsay Jul 22 at 16:24

You are probably more adept at burning fat, where as some people feel they have to eat every few hours or they are starving. – RaiseFitness Jul 22 at 16:31

Eat when hungry. Dont eat when not. Your body is talking to you. Its different from everyone else. Listen to it.

Getting enough sleep? Eating late?

I already do the "only eat when hungry" thing. I'm not looking to change that, but I am wondering if there is some biological reason that some people are naturally hungry in the morning and others aren't. It's more curiosity than looking for a "fix" :) – Lyndsay Jul 22 at 15:17
I think more people are not hungry in the morning than are. We have been conditioned by our culture to beleive that skipping breakfast is a really bad idea. So we eat it regardless of appetite. A high sugar/SAD diet will tend to up hunger/cravings and require more frequent feedings (ie snacks). I see softball parents stuffing their daughters with granola bars after every 90 minute game, even if they mostly sat on the bench. It's no wonder many of these girls are obese (yes, obese at 12 years old). Most hunter-gatheres only eat a small amount in the morning (dinner leftovers, usually). – Dave S. Jul 23 at 16:56

Go to Leangains.com, the most recent article talks about breakfast, hormones, insulin, cortisol, and has links to scientific articles for reference. Breakfast is the most over rated meal of the day.

This article seems to be about why breakfast makes people hungry? What about naturally not being hungry for breakfast? – Lyndsay Jul 22 at 15:09
