I often hear it said that a high intake of fruits and veggies (and little to no animal products) makes one's semen and female ejaculation taste/smell better. So I'm curious... Has anyone noticed an unpleasant funk that they attribute to their high-meat consumption? And if so, what have you done/can you do about it? (note: I know we also can eat a good amount of veggies and fruits, but they said a low meat consumption is important as well). Hope this isn't an inappropriate question!

I don't know about change in taste but since i've been Primal/Paleo(1 year now) i last longer and the amount of semen has increased notoriously. Sorry if it sounds like bragging ;) – Alvaro Jul 22 at 21:23

I have to say, I got a lot of compliments when I was vegan about smell and taste. In the two years Paleo, um, not so much. – valkyrie Jul 22 at 22:50

I don't think it matters. Don't men always taste meaty? ;0 – YoungPaleoLover Jul 23 at 12:23

it would be great if people giving answers to this question specify how many samples and subjects where considered when providing you with an answer... just in the the name of science and statistical correctness, you know – Francisco Garcia Jul 23 at 14:56

Is this what all the kids are up to these days? Tasting themselves?

I know when my breath reeks and my pits stink. Beyond that I got nothing.

Oh, I didn't clarify, I meant... If it had ever been brought to your attention by someone that you smelled/tasted different... – McKenzie Jul 22 at 20:58
LMFAO. I got what you meant Kenzie, and I think SB was joking around. – foreveryoung Jul 22 at 21:03

If you are not eating a ketogenic diet, and you are eating things like honey, fruit, and root vegetables, no artificial junk, and no grains, you're partner will be happy to go down you, and vice versa (assuming you also have good hygiene).

This is one of the reasons I think keto diets are unnatural- horrible breath, gross sweat, and pee. I do not see why ejaculate would be the exception. Lesson; eat fresh produce everyday.

It is rumored that if your partner is unsatisfied with the way you taste, pineapple and celery can help.

...But then again, we're also probably over-sexed in comparison to our paleolithic ancestors (guessing), so maybe they wouldn't have cared so much if it was just a once in a blue moon sort of thing. It is probably the case that scent is bundled up into real attraction, so one would likely never encounter someone at such close-range (cough, wink, nudge) that they though smelled badly.

Or maybe they smelled like ass and sweat anyway, how they tasted didn't make a difference – Alvaro Jul 22 at 21:28

How is a ketogenic diet unnatural? Ketones are the body's preferred energy source. There's nothing wrong with the taste of someone who's in ketosis, it might be a little different but it's not bad and it's certainly not unnatural. – invisible ink Jul 22 at 21:54

Or maybe they just seem "unnatural" to you because your subjective view of what is natural has been defined by our society of eating a non-keto diet. Also I've not noticed in myself, or anyone doing keto that I know, horrible breath/sweat/pee, so I don't understand exactly what you're talking about. I have a mild acetone taste on my breath when doing intense exercise, and that is all – Carl D Jul 22 at 21:56

Interestingly though, some have speculated that Arctic hunter gatherers such as the Inuit do not go into ketosis despite eating what would be considered a "ketogenic" diet. The reason for this may be the glycogen content of the meat they eat, gluconeogenesis derived from dietary protein, or a metabolic adaptation that allows for a more complete combustion of dietary fat that is lacking in other human populations. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Jul 22 at 23:47

I'm all around Paleo. I spread my seed as often as possible and rarely am with the same girl twice. Don't care how I smell or taste....

Completely sarcastic.

Real Female Ejaculation is clear and fairly oderless and is the consistency of water. If you have a counter top about 4.5 feet high, tiled floor and high heals, Ill gladly demonstrate for you. I hope this was not an inappropriate answer!

I do have a counter top about 4.5 feet high, tiled floor and high heals...so long as you treat me like a lady, have a shaved back and after it's all over, you say "Ooh, what a lovely tea party". I'm all yours! Truth. – TruthinessInc Jul 22 at 21:45

finally! people are taking about oral sex again!!

the difference for me has always been how clean the diet is. ketosis only causes offensive smells until the person becomes adjusted and their ketone production meets their energy needs instead of surpassing them.

oddly, as my diet changed, so did my "taste" in men. its hard to believe i used to think pineapple eaters were yummy; not so much anymore.

Research has shown that scent tends to track with physical/visual attractiveness. Hypotheses of attractive smells also include optimizing the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of potential offspring. Maybe diet influences scent, maybe not. Either way, I'd suspect that underlying hormones/pheromones have a deeper influence on attraction than food. While I can only speculate about the evolutionary connections here, it makes much more sense that some sort of underlying genetic connection would relate to attraction than temporary inputs.

"Women appear to prefer the scent of MHC-heterozygous men"

"Women’s facial attractiveness... significantly correlated with body scent attractiveness"

"men exhibit significant scent preferences for women who are at high conception risk in the menstrualccycle"

"Major histocompatibility complex genes, symmetry, and body scent attractiveness in men and women", Behavioral Ecology (2003)

"olfactory and visual channels may work in a complementary way (i.e. odor preference for MHC-dissimilarity and visual preference for MHC-similarity) to achieve an optimal level of genetic variability"

"MHC-correlated mate choice in humans: A review", Psychoneuroendocrinology (2009)

^ Body smell generally is an interesting topic, IMO. I think its an interesting contradiction. On one hand we strive to be ulta-unsmelly because of sterile enviroment induced hypersensetivity to smell. On the other hand if we did too good a job of removing or concealing our odours, it will interfere with sexual attraction/pheromones. Whether a persons body odor smells good or not is genetic. I know that once I was sweating like a pig, when I was a teen, and two girls ended up in an argument about whether it was gross and I should wash immediately or "manly" and not an issue. lol! – Jamie Jul 23 at 1:56
This is pretty much what I was getting at in my previous answer - whatever it is that attracts us to some people's scent isn't much affected by what the person is eating. Chemistry is powerful, and pheromones outrank ketones. The genetic compatibility angle is interesting and I think likely, but pheromones affect us non-procreating gaymos just as well, so I wonder how we fit into the evolutionary picture. – melimel Jul 23 at 3:56

I'm not down with semen, so I can't comment on that, but when it comes to girls my experience is that if I like the way she smells before a ketogenic diet, I'll like the way she smells after, and vice versa. Chemistry is still chemistry (hee hee).

Being in a ketogenic state might change odors, but it doesn't make anyone smell "bad", I don't think, just different. And it's a very small difference.

To me at least, the smells are all about the person (chemistry), not about what they eat. Vegetarians don't "taste better" than meat eaters, etc.

I will disagree in that what someone eats does dramatically affect both how they smell and how they taste, and emotional chemistry is different than the chemistry in a body. – RaiseFitness Jul 22 at 20:50

I agree with you melimel. My boyfriend and I both eat ketogenically and have no issues with one another's aromas, etc. – invisible ink Jul 22 at 21:58

I think theres two main things that effect that will effect male and female sexual fluids -

1) Anything thats smelly on the way in, that the body has to work to get rid of: Garlic (especially garlic), chilli, marijuana, alcohol etc. Perhaps ketones, but then anyone ketogenic for a while will become so effectiant they dont expell any anymore.

Basically anything that would come out in your sweat, if you ate a bucket load for a week, and were sweating like a pig.

2) Fruit

But its not like anyone has done scientific trials on this stuff. Theres too many variables to rely completely on anecdote either.

If the taste/smell is really bad, perhaps then you can worry about the influence of diet?

I've heard of a certain "Super Spunk Smoothie" on the bodybuilding.com forum works quite well...

Perhaps we need to set up an experiment... in the name of science, of course! – Varelse Jul 23 at 16:24
Haha, Of course! :D No but, seriously, it works. Only downside is super high sugar intake. link: forum.bodybuilding.com/… My suggestion is to just increase 'safe' vegetables while decreasing 'acidic' vegetables. more celery, less asparagus. I know, life sucks. – Klaud Jul 24 at 4:06

Yeast can be the culprit of a bad odor/taste. Taking an herbal tincture like Pau D'arco everyday and eating Bio-K (a concentrated probiotic yogurt) has kept my reoccurring infections at bay for over a year. I didn't have any symptoms that you typically think of when you hear yeast infections... but I did have a less than mmm!-I-want-to-lick-you odor. Problem solved. Thank god... it was ruining fore play in a big way. :/

On a slightly more serious note, I've got $1000 that says more meat equals higher sex hormones equals higher phermone content of sweat equals more intense attraction.

I'd substitute "cholesterol" for meat, but I suppose the latter implies the former. You're likely onto something there. – raney Jul 23 at 19:20

Well, remember "You are what you eat"

I know for sure that salami changes my smell. Maybe the issue is thinking that Paleo is all good things. Paleo is overall, good health, but there are diets which can be improved for better skin, better smell, better taste, better mood, better strength... usually not perfectly compatible with perfect health. Is it healthy dieting to be sub 10% body fat for great looking abs?

So I believe Paleo was not intended for good semen taste. Indeed, I always though that vegetarian girls had... a different kick to it. But do not confuse dietary influence with age, I believe that is also a huge factor to consider.

Could this have to do with nitrogen (and thereby, ammonia) excretion from the breakdown of amino acids in higher protein foods? See the Urea Cycle for more on that. That's the only pseudo-scientific thought I can muster regarding the stigmatization of meat in this context.

In practice: I will say that the vegan women I've been with usually taste a bit better, though that is usually coupled with yoga practice and avoiding of processed foods, so I'm not sure one can blame the meat specifically.

I'm also going to go on record stating that eating meat and fish daily means more to me than being...ahem, tasted every now and then. I never understood the appeal when compared with actual sex.

The below link is information on herbs that are supposed to help you smell better. I know it's not the best source but hey they are NATURAL herbs so couldn't hurt, right? Anyway, according to the article the oils from the herbs are secreted through the skin helping aid in body odor, fresh breath and more. I also know there are herbal teas out there that are supposed to help body odor...as for taste? I guess you could always experiment..How fun would that be??? Eh? ;)
