How do you check if you have magnesium deficiency? – VB Jul 23 at 5:17

I find taking a dose of high quality omega 3 helps when I start to feel like this – julianne Jul 23 at 7:42
i don't think you can check for a deficiency...during a google search I discovered a claim that magnesium is essential in the bloodstream. If your deficient your body will transfer mag. from your bones and muscles into the bloodstream making blood tests worthless. – Andrew Jul 23 at 10:55
Yes. I use magnesium oil applied topically. – Dave S. Jul 23 at 13:38

One more 'yes' from me: Natural Calm most nights before bed. 2tsp or so. I also do the occasional Epsom soak.

I did the same for however long it took me to go through a container of Natural Calm, last year during the fall - and I didn't immediately buy any more at the time. By this spring (six months later?) I was waking up with stabbing muscle cramps in the backs of my legs every night, and was getting to be depressed and anxious a lot of the time.

I saw significant improvements in mood and the cramps went away within a couple weeks of adding back NC. Wonderful stuff.

I went out last night and bought my multivitamin and magnesium oxide and took them before bed...i feel 100% better now but im not sure if it was the magnesium or the multi...today im gonna go out and buy some Natural calm magnesium citrate. I did some research when I got home and didn't like what it said about oxide..so ill take the oxide in the morning until its gone and use the citrate at night. – Andrew Jul 23 at 19:11

The forms of magnesium that are chelated with an -ate (glycinate, citrate, etc) will be more bio-available than the oxide. – raney Jul 23 at 19:17

In addition to 400 of magnesum glycinate daily, I have an occasional Epsom salt bath. To mix it up I'll do the Epsom salt bath in cold water now and then.

Magnesium deficiency could be just the tip of the iceberg. You could have multiple mineral and vitamin deficiencies.

I love the epsom salt bath! Of course, maybe it's just soaking in the tub that I really love... – Dave S. Jul 23 at 13:36

First, How is your sleep, stress and exercise? are you eating enough to recover? sounds more like overtraining than a deficiency. More information would be good.

Second, you should give magnesium a shot if you want to. I'd recommend natural calm, you just mix it in water and off you go.

sleep could be better--im in bed long enough but not good quality. carbs are definatly high enough. overtraining not a problem--i took two days off in a row and was still sore after my workout. stress--pretty high, but only cause i feel like crap and have an active job (fast food) – Andrew Jul 23 at 2:40
Try poliquin's sweet dreams or AOR's ortho sleep. they have ingredients to improve sleep quality, so you get more, for less. Personally haven't tried Poliquin's stuff, but the AOR stuff zonks me out damn nicely. Try deep breathing exercises for stress and positive thinking. I Know it sounds like voodoo, but it works. – Klaud Jul 24 at 4:02

I do. I started taking a mag/pot supplement (Solaray) for restless leg, and I found that generally I feel more settled when I take it on a regular basis. It's one of the very few things I put in my body that I feel like I notice a "true" improvement from (as opposed to a possible, however positive, placebo effect).

Yup. I just do it when I feel like I need it. Either a few days of epsom salts baths, or a bit of oral supplement. Before I started to do this, I was high wired, having trouble sleeping, and had a "bounding" pulse.

I also make sure and eat lots of spinach and silverbeet too.

at first i thought spinach was the problem..my number two theory for explaining my problem is a buildup of oxalic acid. – Andrew Jul 23 at 19:12
Anything leafy and dark green will provide magnesium I beleive, if your worried about oxalic acid. – Jamie Jul 24 at 1:04

I take 200mgs of magnesium citrate with breakfast and another 200 before bed, when I remember. I don't take it every day or always twice a day.

I take vitamin D with magnesium at night to help me sleep. I was also exhausted and bloodwork indicated I had an iron deficiency. Crazy, since I'm paleo and eat buckets of red meat.

Good luck sorting out your fatigue issues!

I take ZMA half an hour before going to bed, and have been having the best nights sleep I've ever had. I really recommend it.

I use magnesium chloride AKA magnesium oil, which I prefer over oral supplementation. With oral supplements, if you take too much- it will cause diarrhea. Everyone has their unique "sweet spot." Look at the directions on a bottle of Natural Calm- It tells you to increase dosage until your stools are "comfortably loose". There's nothing comfortable about loose stools!

Rubbing magnesium into the skins avoids all the guesswork. It regulates how much is absorbed. Just spray it on and go! I like that.

I personally love a loose stool.

I used to take natural calm and ZMA.

Now I only take magnesium bys glycinate from source naturals. I usually take only two caps per day, which is only 200mg. That's not a whole lot. I just don't think I need that much.
