Yesterday I got stung on the lip and now it is twice as big as it should be. Any ideas on how to make the swelling go down? Thanks people.

Hell yeah on the antihistamine. The swelling is an allergic reaction; use the drugs when they're appropriate. – Blitherakt Jul 24 at 7:26

Yes. And if it gets worse, see a doc. If you have bad swelling from bee stings you might want to make sure you're not really allergic. – blueballoon Jul 24 at 11:29

Yep yep. I'm having awful reactions to mosquito bites since moving to the east coast, only thing that helps is benadryl. Cetirizine (Zyrtec) if it's really bad. – Canis Minor Jul 24 at 12:04

My wife mixes baking soda with water for a paste that she spreads over the sting. It works quite well. My 3 year old stopped crying almost immediately.

Oh...your looking for something for the day after swelling. Ice pack/Ice cube. Use it for about 20 minutes out of the hour.

For a topical, I use straight up lavender oil. Really brings the inflammation down, and it doesn't burn like other oils or creams.

I'd be hesitant to put straight essential oils on the lip, that skin is already a little delicate and very sensitive even before swelling. Lavender is pretty mild, though, maybe just dilute it a bit with a carrier oil. – Canis Minor Jul 24 at 12:02
I, and everyone I've tried this on (including toddlers) have found no sting from direct application of lavender oil. It's the only oil that I would apply to a wound with no carrier. That being said, yeah, if you have very delicate skin (ex if your lips itch even from applying lip balm) you could dilute. I'd recommend jojoba if you have it, or coconut. – JeJ Jul 24 at 15:38

That will take some skill :) – Primalrat Jul 24 at 14:16

Take the tobacco out of a cigar or cigarette. Moisten and apply to sting. It's old school and works.
