I am currently doing an intermittent fasting where I do not eat anything until WHEN (When Hunger Ensues Naturally). I find it easier to eat this way and just eat whenever I actually feel hungry.

However, yesterday I hadn't eaten for 16 hours and then I ate 3 slices of pizzas...so much for that. Anyways, that was a slip.

I'm wondering if coffee is beneficial for the fast or if its something that should rather not be drinked during the fast?

Thanks.

Agree with CD below. Martin Berkham of Lean Gains is considered a guru of intermittent fasting. He says that a cup of coffee with a splash of milk is fine during the fast. Not sure if bulletproof coffee would qualify... – Dave S. Jul 24 at 19:20
:o similiar to you, not hungry, then you have no food and the pizza shop is open, oh hell not going to bed hungry. – polynesian_metal Dec 22 at 7:06

I drink coffee during IF and have no problems. Here's from Mark Sission's FAQ:

Can I drink coffee or tea during a fast? How about adding cream or coconut oil to it – will that take me out of the fasted state?

Coffee is actually beneficial for fat-burning, especially during a fast. One study found that an infusion of epinephrine – a hormone which coffee increases – during “starvation” enhanced its lipolytic and thermogenic effects. In other words, fat-burning and metabolism up-regulated in response to epinephrine (more so than usual). Epinephrine also lowers appetite, which can be extremely helpful for people trying to stave off hunger during a fast. Tea, and anything non-caloric, is also fine.

Adding a pure fat source won’t “take you out” of the fasted state, and it may take the edge off the hunger, but it will reduce the body fat you burn by a bit.

Yeah I agree....I have been doing fasting anywhere from 12-24hrs a day for the past year and have a triple espresso with splash of coconut milk every morning and never found it hampered my results. I say go for it!! You can always experiment and remove it for a week and see if your fat loss quickens but I found it was a great morning pick me up or even a great pre workout stim before fasted training. – Frank Sabia Jr Jul 24 at 20:55

I suggest doing whatever you feel like doing. If you enjoy coffee, go for it. Chances are you are not consuming enough calories in your coffee to completely break your fast. I burn 65 calories an hour doing absolutely nothing.

You guys should discover STEVIA DROPS - it is a natural sweetener derived from a plant and it is crazy sweet - without all the health risks of artificial sweeteners like aspartame or others on the market.

With its steviol glycoside extracts having up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar, stevia has garnered attention with the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar food alternatives. Because stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose, it is attractive as a natural sweetener to people on calorie-controlled diets.

Its existence has been kept quiet for years and it (until recently) has been illegal in Europe because governments enjoy high taxes on sugar.

Anyway - not to go on too much - but its awesome, and it makes your fasting days go a little smoother.

Merry Christmas people!!

I don't see how this even remotely answers the question asked. – Canis Minor Dec 22 at 13:15
