Can anybody recommend some digestive enzyme brands? Has anybody had any luck with what The Wolf recommends? Do you take them before or after? ACV anyone?
As I stupidly allowed a doctor to remove my gall bladder, I have to use these things every day at every meal.
I've had very good luck with Now Super Enzymes. I tried some from VRP, but the capsules are very small, and I had to use something like 10-15 to get the same effect, and still had digestion issues.
Take them right before you eat, and avoid drinking too much liquid with your food. I usually take 3-4 Now Super Enzyme capsules before each full sized meals. Usually you want them whenever you consume anything with protein and fat.
If your issue is digesting meat, and it feels like it just sits in your stomach like a brick, you're not producing enough acid. Making sure that you absorb minerals such as potassium and magnesium and don't have a leaky gut is important for acid production.
For low acid, you might want either digestive enzymes, or Betaine HCL (or both depending on the stuff you take). The protocol for both is the same. On an empty stomach take one pill at a time, and with your hand above your stomach feel for heat. Once you feel heat, or have taken 5 and haven't felt anything, stop that's your dose. (This comes from Robb Wolf of course, whose earlier podcasts refer to these kinds of issues and are worth listening to.)
BTW: You can tell if they work by the shape of your poop. If they're smooth, logs rather than stuff that looks like grapes clustered together, they're doing their job.
Rob Wolff recommended SUPER cheap Great when eating cooked meals.
I've reaped FAR more benefits from simply eating a lot more fermented foods vs. taking a supplement.
Sauerkraut, coconut milk (and raw milk) kefir, kimchi, BA organics raw salad, quality yogurt, etc.
I believe Robb and Chris Kresser in more recent podcasts recommend Solaray Betaine Hydrochloride as they felt that they got a more consistent response from them. Robb stated that he felt there was an issue with inconsistant quality of NOW Foods Super Enzymes.
