I've been doing straight-edge no-pooing (no honey, no baking soda, no vinegar, just rinsing with water) for a month now. I color my hair with henna which was quite a challenge since I'm not shampooing. The last time I colored was 2 weeks after I stopped shampooing. I found it very drying. My hair lost all of the oily build up that it had acquired and got all fly-away. The color took just fine though and so far (it's been two weeks) seems to be holding just fine.
I have not seen this, in any no poo advice, but you can quite successfully wash your hair and body with honey. It's actually quite pleasant. All the no pooers blogs I've seen have a sort of baking soda, vinegar mix.
At the moment I dye my hair with henna and then indigo on the gray bits at the front, and I desperately want to go no 'poo for good (I tried it for a month and it was not a 100% success - because of my self-discipline more than anything). The Henna I found was not so much of a problem but the indigo, well ugh, it was foul, I had to wash it out with shampoo!
Whilst I was no 'poo for that month, I found a herb called cassia obovata that my hair dye supplier was selling and tried that and it really helped. It is a clay like substance and you can use it on your hair and nails. It adds weight to your hair like a conditioner to reduce the fly-away effect and leaves it really soft at the same time.
I have to say that I went no 'poo whilst using henna in the winter in the mountains and it was so dry that my hair was a ball of static, but the CO really did help.
Another thing I used to clean my hair was Rhassoul clay which you can get in most health food shops. It smells lovely and really cleans your hair, you can leave it in like a mask for a few hours or the night if you want to. Using that with CO was a good regime.
I found that henna leaves my hair in really, really good condition in the long run, def. worth keeping up with it in combination with the other muds...
I've decided to skip the shampoo and conditioner--so far on day 5. I just braid it and stick a hat on so I'm not tempted to mess with my hair and feel how gross and oily it is.
I'm not real big on intermediate steps, honey, baking soda, etc, so I'm just going to see how it goes scrubbing with water.
Make a paste of BS, put on scalp, rub, rinse. Make a light mix of vinegar and water, pour over hair. Rinse if desired. Leave in if desired. (won't smell vinegary when dry) My hair is soft clean and easy to style no tangles.
Have tried plain water and liked it as an in between freshener. Would like to try honey sometime now that I'm not really eating it.
Oh and with hair color it helps it last longer cos you don't wash the color out as often. On mine that's how it works and I wash only every 5-7 days.
I still use shampoo, but I got down to use it about once in 5 days (I want to get used to a week of no washing). I use semi-permanent dyes, and it's been ok. The color lasts for longer if you don't wash that often too. I am thinking of switching off completely, even though the shampoo I'm using now is very delicate and natural. I might try the baking soda method...
