This female I know has had irregular menstrual cycles from when she started menstruating. She is 5'5 and weighs 109-ish pounds. Well apparently she has been bleeding for 20 days or more now last month. This is the first time that has ever happened to her I think. She's been to the doctor's before about the irregular cycles, and the doctor wants her on birth control pills but fortunately her or her mom don't want/allow that. What are some reasons that she is bleeding for this long? What are some things one can do to normalize their menstrual cycles? This female is 17 by the way. Any information about this would be greatly appreciated!

Most likely PCOS or endo. She needs a real doctor who can help her. If she has either, her fertility is at risk and her mom isn't helping her by denying her treatment. – SatFat Jul 27 at 6:23

Why is it "fortunate" that her mother is denying her treatment? – borofergie Jul 27 at 7:44

Fibroids can cause that much bleeding. She will probably require an ultrasound to look at her ovaries/uterus/etc. She needs to find a better doctor who will look into this. – A at Grain Free Diet Jul 27 at 9:42

I think it depends on the mother's motivation. Not allowing BCP for legitimate medical reasons because of morality is unfortunate. Wanting the doctor to get to the root of the problem rather than putting a band-aid on the symptom is fortunate. – jess6 Jul 27 at 13:10

Well, I think some of you misunderstood my "fortunate" comment. What I meant was that birth control pills, have really screwed up alot of girl's/women's systems that are irreversible. If I'm correct, it's not even a real period that the birth control brings back(not 100% sure). I am sure there are other ways of going about it other than birth control pills. Girls are being prescribed it for every imaginable thing, its ridiculous in my opinion. Did any of you also realize that she is underweight? – Soul Jul 27 at 14:41

I will second her ruling out any more serious issues that I'm ignorant of (like the fibroids suggested above)... but if this is a hormonal issue, herbs can help to tone the endocrine and reproductive systems.

I was in the middle of copying it straight out of my copy of Rosemary Gladstar's Herbal Healing for Women, but I feel that if she wants to treat this and is committed... she should buy a copy herself and understand the herbs and why she's taking them. :)

This is a great reference book for any woman interested in herbs!

Oh my. I am so sorry. 17! Wow that is too young for this kind of a problem.
She needs a doctor immediately who will look at more than just BC for a fix. How about lets find the cause doctor!? ARGggggggggggggg do not get me started.

There are many many reasons this can happen. Guessing is not advised.
A good doctor is advised.

Anyway, in the meantime she should take some iron as well as eat beef.
Iron Extra by Vitanica is an excellent whole foods based iron supplement and will not cause consitipation.

My first thought was if she's sexually active which is likely at that age, she may be having a miscarriage with complications.

It would probably be good for a doc to check out her iron levels.

At her weight, I'm surprised she still has her periods. Has she been checked out for celiac? She might have some deficiencies that are making things catawampus.

Has anyone else experienced bleeding more than seven days? What was the cause?

my friend did but she was almost 41 years old. Had something to do with changes in the lining of her cervix... like a pre-cancerous thing. They did an ablation (that may not be the correct spelling) and it worked. – Crowlover Jul 27 at 19:41
yes its called "cervical ablation" – Crowlover Jul 27 at 19:42
