I take 5 capsules of the Now Foods Super Enzymes with each meal. I didnt have any gas on the Paleo diet but now I do. I thought enzymes were supposed to get rid of gas and bloating not cause it? Should I just keep on using them or switch brands? I have many food allergies and probably leaky gut which is why I am taking them.

Edit: I also started taking a Acidophilus (dairy free) probiotic. Dont know if this is an issue.

I have heard some on here say in the past that they had probs with acidophilus, so that one can't be eliminated as a potential culprit. SOunds like you started two things at once. Either one is suspect. Might want to try a week with no acidophilus and see if that helps. If not, then try a week with no enzymes and see if that helps. There is nothing I know of that always works for everyone all the time.

Eliminating factors out of your diet is a fantastic, though time consuming, way to find issues with your diet. – Miso Beno Nov 9 2010 at 22:01

An enzyme is a generic word for any protein that acts as a catalyst for chemical reactions. Chances are these supplements are the source of your gas, and aren't doing anything to aid your body's ability to digest food.

EDIT: Upon further review, most of the stuff contained in Now Foods Super Enzymes occur naturally in other foods, and in your body. If your conventional diet is working for you then you shouldn't need to supplement beyond a basic multivitamin.

EDIT 2: After preforming a little more research, I would consider talking to your doctor/nutritional about berberine supplementation. It seems that berberine is an anti-inflammatory, and has already been used successfully to aid patients with leaky gut.

Conventional diet is not working for me. I have leaky gut and I need it to heal. I do not eat grains, dairy, eggs or nightshades. – Geoff Nov 9 2010 at 21:23

By conventional, I meant Paleo. Sorry. – Miso Beno Nov 9 2010 at 21:25
I eat Paleo. Have been for over a year. Organic meat, organic vegetables, organic fruit, minimal seeds and nuts, coconut oil, no dairy, grains, legumes, eggs or nightshades. I appreciate the "diet heals" and I agree that it is the main component. However, some people need more to get back into balance. – Geoff Nov 9 2010 at 21:43
