So I have a dilemma. I've been toying with Paleo for the past few months and have noticed a huge difference in how I feel. I'm very gluten intolerant and can't seem to digest any grain properly. I go awhile eating 90/10 Paleo with the 10% consisting of plant based protein (since its easily digestible for me) and occasional organic peanut butter. I completely a went very low carb and felt amazing but for some ungodly reason my hormones get the best of me and I fall off the wagon, this last time for a whole week. I ate Mexican food, dairy desserts etc. and came down with flu like symptoms and haven't worked out in 4 days because of the inability to function. I always find myself returning to paleo feeling great and healing then totally killing myself... I need some serious motivation and a mental uplift on how I can abstain from SAD foods when everyone around me enjoys whatever they want. I feel terribly Ill my hair is falling out sand Im swollen everywhere. Help!
Well I think you answered your own question, you say you feel better when you eat paleo and feel like crap when you don't. Well, I suggest you stick with the paleo diet and avoid the bad mexican food :-). The flu-like symptoms are a common side-effect of eating bad food after not doing so after a while. When I cheat (intentionally or otherwise) with wheat or grains, I feel like crap for 24-48 hours.
It can take a while to get to the point that you don't have cravings or the tendency to fall off the wagon. You can find other threads here about what people do to help with that. Exercise is a crucial component too, and regular exercise will help with your moods, hormones, and general health.
I find that small cheats help curb the larger binges. So instead of all the tortillas with the Mexican food, try just having a single meal with some corn tortillas instead, and then wait a day. If you wait, you'll get the reminder, and the inflammation won't get as extreme. I know when I ingest gluten, wheat, etc, my ankles swell and my joints hurt for days afterwards. Being that the reaction happens to fast, I'm quick to refocus my energy on providing some better food for my body.
For hormonal times, use dark chocolate, oranges or anything Paleo/Primal-approved, even if you eat like 800 more calories. I tried that this month, and I ended up losing simply because I kept my carbs normal, but just ate more fat and protein, with a little bit of sugar to help curb cravings.
