So I thought it was acid reflux but turns out it's a hiatal hernia. Small but present. Does anyone have any expertise in this area? What causes them and what can be done to natually heal it? Do certain exercises (like ab work) make it worse? I may sound like a moron here but I am asking to learn.

I DO understand that I need to treat my diet as if I had GERD and the Dr RX'd me Dexalant which I'm reluctant to take.

Thanks...

seems like the odds are against us, from wiki, "Incidence of hiatal hernias increases with age; approximately 60% of individuals aged 50 or older have a hiatal hernia." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiatus_hernia#Epidemiology – daz Oct 22 at 22:40

I was diagnosed with GERD but had no symptoms, the GI just said I "probably had it" and put me on a PPI which was terrible. I did have a small sliding hiatal hernia, which was discovered during a scoping. I did tons of research, and there are articles on how to adjust a hiatal hernia, but I never tried it myself. I found a chiro who is about an hour north of NYC who specializes in adjusting hiatal hernias. I was desperate to try anything, so I did, and it resolved all of my issues after 6 sessions or so and this was proven after a second scoping and a barium swallow test. I also lost some weight during this time which both doctors agreed must have helped.

These aren't from my Dr., but helpful websites. I had anxiety and heart palpitations that went away after treatment (and after some magnesium supplementation - so who knows).

I don't know if it would work for everyone, but it definitely worked for me. I go in about every 8 weeks for "maintenance" and peace of mind, though my symptoms are all gone. Not on any drugs or PPIs.

As DIY suggested, a lot of people recommend wedge pillows for GERD or hiatal hernias.

I found the book "Why Stomach Acid is Good For You," to be very helpful. The author discusses GERD, gives protocols for healing as well. by Jonathan Wright

Thanks. I did try HCL therapy for a while becuase we assumed it was GERD. HCL made it worse but then again, it was a hernia. Familiar spots but different animal. – Stressed Aug 2 at 12:04

mom had one...has one. prop your bed up at the head by an inch or two, just so you're not lying flat. helps a lot she said.

I was able to cut my GERD medicine in half by supplementing with organic inner filet aloe vera gel mixed in with some juice or water whenever I had a trigger exposure (spicy, acidic or heavy booze). You can get the aloe gel at almost any health food store. Affordable too!

Its gross texturally, but it really does make a difference.

My doc also recommended eating a carrot before bed as it will help absorb the excess acid.
