im 28 now. Its much worse than when I was going through puberty. The only constants ovre the course of my 4 year paleo experiment were fruit consumption(large and small at times.) and coconut oil consumption.

I'm a fairly pale redheaded person, is it possible that fruit and coconut are not what i have evolved to eat? This is the last theory im hanging on to as far as diet goes, otherwise I think diet may just not be my problem.

Did you not have problems with acne before starting to eat paleo? – Matt Aug 2 at 8:36

Diet may not be the cause of your acne at all... or the solution.

Do you have any issues related to hormones including thyroid?

Also, is your vitamin D level optimal (at least 60)?

Yes, diet is related to acne. Doing things that might improve thyroid function might actually MAKE you break out. Iodine detoxes bromine out of the body and it's very likely that someone improving their thyroid function might get acne. – BoneBrothFast Aug 2 at 14:14
Not always BoneBroth, not always and not for every single person with acne. – Crowlover Aug 2 at 14:41

Does your version of paleo include dairy in any form? For me, when I indulge in a little bit of dairy (cheese or sour cream usually) I usually see breakouts afterwards.

Also when I supplement with Vitamin D as another poster suggested, it seems to make a difference in how clear my skin is. I noticed this when I started trying to optimize Vitamin D levels through the winter.

Dairy increases DHT, which DIRECTLY causes acne if not let unchecked. Try taking a Zinc supplement and see if it works. – BoneBrothFast Aug 2 at 14:15
what is this DIRECT link you are referring to please BoneBroth? – Crowlover Aug 2 at 14:45
^DHT is an androgen. Any derm will tell you androgens = primary cause of acne. P. acnes plays a very small role in the formation of acne. – BoneBrothFast Aug 5 at 18:23

You might have gut flora issues. Have you tried professional strength probiotics? Tons of bone broth and some vegetables to start the elimination diet? Have you tried rawfood only (no fruit)?

lol how do you do raw food without fruit? that makes no sense – Greensun Aug 2 at 6:49
raw green leafy vegetables, raw carrots, raw radishes, etc. I think eliminating things one at a time will give you a better idea of what causes inflammation. – VB Aug 2 at 7:14
And I would eliminate coconut oil for sure just to see what the reaction might be. You can always introduce everything back later. – VB Aug 2 at 7:15
that's how rawpaleodietforum.com – Eugene K Aug 2 at 7:35
But you can still eat cooked meat and fish. – VB Aug 2 at 8:38
