Okay, lots of questions. There seem to be mixed reviews online, and I figured the best people to ask are the ones on here! How long can meat stay in the freezer before going bad? When I take out frozen meat from my freezer, how long will it last in the refrigerator to thaw out before going bad? Is it bad to put it back in the freezer if I end up not using it after a few days? How long can cooked meat stay in the refrigerator? Thanks for all your help!

Depending on the constant temperature of the freezer, the meat is good for a very long time- it's the quality that changes. http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FactSheets/Focus_On_Freezing/index.asp |

If you want to be safe you can store all of your meat frozen provided it is well sealed you can thaw it as needed, just pop it in a bowl or sink full of warm(not hot) water for an hour or so to let it thaw out. If you are going to leave it in the fridge I would say a few days, when it starts turning grey it is time to throw it out. Trust me you will know when you have left it in the fridge for too long. |

The usual recommendations are 1-2 months in the freezer, 3-4 days in the fridge (raw or thawed from frozen), assuming you have the meat in airtight containers/bags. It is not good to defrost things more than once. What I like to do is divide meat (raw or cooked) into individual servings, put each in a zipper baggie and then put all the little baggies in a large zippered freezer bag. That way I don't have to worry about meat hanging around in the fridge because I take it out of the freezer. With frozen cooked meat, I'll take it to work frozen and then add it to salad. It takes ~4 hrs to defrost. And I'll have 3-4 types of meat in different freezer bags so that I always have plenty of choice. |

If you've thawed frozen meat and then cooked it, freezing the cooked food is fine. Don't refreeze raw meat after you've completely thawed it. |
