I do leangains 16/8 intermittent fasting, eating at 12pm and 8pm. I don't really have a problem with ravenous hunger in the morning, but have found taking 15g of coconut oil upon rising takes the edge off.

I started doing it because I've read that :

A) coconut oil kick starts ketosis and fat burning

B) blunts hunger

C) does not interrupt the good kind of autophagy that protein and carb would

So D) it's like having the benefits of fasting, remaining in autophagic processes, while giving an extra boost

What are your ideas?

I do 18/6 IF, and on some mornings I do exactly this, especially when I know I'm going to be physically active or on the go all day--I pound a shotglass of MCT oil. And I do it for all the same reasons, plus:

E) I tend to poop infrequently on paleo, and this definitely solves that problem.

+1 for TMI. lol – Acumen Athletics Aug 7 at 23:37
Aw, hey--that's pretty mild TMI by Paleohacks standards! But thanks for the +1! :D – More Butter Please Aug 8 at 7:31

when i started IF i fastet from 8pm to 8am then i had a couple of tea's with coconut oil, work out at 1 and then a snack around 3ish and diner at 8. it worked great for me, not sure i could do it without the CO.

now i do something like bulletproof IF, i fast from 8pm to 1o/11, then i have tea with CO, MCT oil and butter and i fast until 3/4. my trainings are even harder and iam not as hungry when i start my eating window.

i belive that fasting and ketosis / fat fast has the same effect and the fat really helps me to go longer without food. its great as i work in a office and we only have a microwave, so i can cook a nice meal in the evening. i hate sleeping hungry!

Um, 8pm to 8am isn't really fasting as you haven't skipped any meals. Just means you've had an earlier dinner. :) +1 for the rest of the answer. – raydawg Sep 9 at 11:14

raydawg - She described the same as the other commenters. The 8am intake was only coconut oil. 1st intake of protein or carbs was at 3pm. – sean Sep 22 at 9:32

I also do 18/6 IF and most mornings I have a paleo espresso with coconut milk. But on days where I know I can't to train till later and my fast my go past or close to the 16 hr mark, I use coconut oil to get me over the hump of energy at that point. It worked really well. But I didn't make it a habit or ritual. It was my home made 5 hr energy shot : )

Funny I need nothing for energy to train. Even at 16hrs, of I'm feelin bonked, the training itself picks me up. – animaleater Aug 8 at 12:56

I actually like MCT Oil better. Take a few tablespoons during a fast, especially when you hit the "wall", usually around 16 hours for me, and it's amazing. Now I'm not concerned with burning fat necessarily, but the energy and cognitive stimulation I get from MCT Oil would make it very easy to perform whatever is needed to burn fat.

MCT Oil is one of the best ways to get a fantastic workout in during a long fast. Take a tablespoon before and a tablespoon during and I can train for 60+ minutes just like I was in a fed state.

MCT oil makes me get cramps and diharea. BAD. Otherwise, I don't notice any more of a boost over pure coconut oil, which doesn't bother me. – animaleater Aug 8 at 12:54
And as I'm doing leangains, I AM CONCERNED with burning fat. – animaleater Aug 8 at 12:57
To each their own with the Coconut vs MCT. Don't get me wrong either, I've really cut down in the past (got down to about 7% body fat, around 12% now) and still kept the MCT's in the form of Coconut or MCT Oil in the mix. The key is whether or not they give you an energy boost. If you don't see benefits from them as a pre-workout, don't bother. – KA24 Aug 8 at 13:21
@animaleater Cramps + diarrhea sounds like it might be bad gut flora - MCTs shouldn't affect gut flora, but they can kill the bad bugs, and when they do, you'd get these side effects. You might need to raise your fermented foods. – raydawg Sep 9 at 11:12
I eat kraut and take Dr Ohhiras probiotics. When I take MCT oil (NOT reg coconut oil which is fine) I get really bad cramping and liquid diarrhea 30 min later! Not the same as the die off effect. It's a straight up rejection by my body for whatever reason. – animaleater Nov 15 at 23:06

Just to revisit this question, I have found that taking ANY calories on a fast makes the fast HARDER, that is, it triggers hunger instead of aleiviating it. I actually like the energetic feeling of the fast, and taking oil, or even cream/butter/milk/coconut milk in tea or coffee simply tantalizes my senses and my body says, MORE! I find that small meals do the same thing. Eat big, or fast; that's what works for me.

Eat big or fast. Same goes for me! – whoreball Sep 9 at 13:03

it stops being a fast when you eat (consume calories) I do 24-30 our fasts once a week, and I drink water, I don't feel any hunger, then again I am keto-adapted. I heard than an intake of more than what was it 75 calories ends a fast?
