Okay, so I am following a low carb paleo diet. And I recently had some heart rate issues, that turned out to in fact be hyperthyroid in nature.
So far as that is concerned, I am waiting six weeks with reduced iodine in my diet (was high, lots iodised salt, heaps of eggs, cheese, seafood etc) to see if it settles down, and to also check then if its autoimmune (only really peaked up with high iodine in the diet).
So sadly, I am ATM trying to deal with this with diet etc alone (hyperthyroid sucks!). Although I am going to check soon and see if I can get some beta blockers or something to calm me and my heartrate down in the meantime.
So, I am basically wondering if anyone else on paleohackers is hyperthyroid, and if they have any useful tips for me? Any advice would be much appreciated.
Switching my breakfast this week to stew and some occasional nut cereals w/ almond milk, is one adjustment. Cant seem to do even small amounts of exercise without my heartrate taking a long time to settle back down. Whole thing is blargh...
Consider cutting down on coconut oil, the MCTs are very pro-thyroid and maybe the underlying cause of your palpitations.

But here's another idea: In some cases of hashimoto's there's an initial upregulation of thyroid activity. Hashimoto is an autoimmune conditon and it could be helpful to look in this direction. Though it seems that gluten is one of the major triggers of hashimoto's, there are many cross-reactive foods besides gluten. Actually it could be anything derived from seeds/kernels/nuts and even coffee, that causes an immune reaction. If you have a history of allergies and intolerances it might be reasonable to follow the paleo autoimmune protocol and look how things develop.
Caffeine can do this too.. and maybe way to many calories per day?
Jamie, sorry to hear about this. Actually for a long time I have suspected I had hypothyroid, but I don't think it is the case now. Well, I will never know.
Not to answer your question (because I have no idea, honestly), but I found something else that makes my life easier. Recently I have started taking mega doses of alive probiotics (where I live they sell them in little glass jars at the pharmacy, where they are kept refrigerated) and it seems to be easing a lot of my symptoms.Even the dark circles under my eyes are not as dark.
Knowing that you had a history of fighting off infection, have you tried real life probiotics? You don't have to have a lot of it, just the right kind? I have a suspicion that most probiotics in a pill form is dead by the time you buy them.
Try it - I really feel the difference.
There used to be a Paleohacker, her nick was Nance, and she swore by water kefir (not milk, but the one with water). Maybe it is worth a shot?
I have tried making my own beet kvass and almost died drinking it - it was a very bad experience for some reason. But the simple yet live probiotics work for me.
