I have been eating gluten-free for over a year and recently started eating Paleo. I know people have seen dramatic results with a Paleo lifestyle, however I'm guessing mine won't be quite as dramatic since I had already given up gluten.
Has anyone else--particularly women--gone from just gluten free to Paleo, and how long before you noticed any results? It's been almost three weeks and I haven't seen much of a change (FYI, I have also increased the intensity of my workouts). I am hoping to lose a little fat and gain more energy.
I ate gluten-free for about 9 months without a change in my weight. My diet at that point included plenty of GF bread, GF cereal, GF desserts, and sugary beverages.
I started losing weight within the first week of Paleo after cutting out the sugar and processed gluten-free foods.
I'm 33, male, 5' 11". I started at 180 pounds eating gluten-free, after about 8 months paleo (including safe starches) I'm about 160 pounds. My exercise eating gluten-free and eating paleo stayed constant, just a couple hours of walking and two bodyweight strength training sessions per week.
Gluten free for 10 years which has had lots of positives for my health (except weight gain continued on the GF diet.) Still I saw lots of new positive effects within one week of going paleo and cutting out all grains&potatoes. I haven't given up my high-fat dairy...I'm not sure that I will as it seems some works out okay for me.
I was gluten free for about 8 months before going Paleo. My gluten free diet was free of all processed food, sugars, and dairy already, so the only thing I dropped were gluten free grains (brown/white rice, quinoa, risotto) and legumes. After about 4 weeks I noticed much improvement in my digestion and bowel movements, which for me meant one huge clearing/healthy movement in the morning rather than my usual loose/sloppy several movements a day. My energy was more stable and my anxiety was lower (or maybe just less volatile). My only complaint was being hungry (ok maybe STARVING) between lunch and dinner, but that's mostly my fault for not making sure I had Paleo friendly food accessible.
My biggest problem was that I was losing too much weight as I'm already underweight and need to GAIN. I tried adding in 3 cups of brown rice a day for 2 weeks after 6 weeks of Paleo in an attempt to gain some weight and all it did was ruin my bowel movements and make my stomach grumble all day.
Thanks all, for your comments. I'm going on four weeks now and definitely feel less fatigued (YAY!!!), although I can't see a change in my physical appearance and am feeling a little frustrated.
When I ate strictly GF, I ate pretty clean, although I did eat gluten-free grains such as rice, quinoa and buckwheat. I gave all of those things up as well as corn, beans, etc. I am pretty much eating Primal since I occasionally will have dairy. Could that be the reason I'm not seeing any results?
At the same time I changed my diet, I also increased the intensity of my workouts (I work out six hours a week: two hours strength, two hours cardio and two hours yoga). I switched trainers and now work out with the equivalent of a male Jillian (from Biggest Loser :o)), started doing hot yoga and am doing more high intensity interval cardio.
I am 45 years old. 5 feet, 4.5 inches and weight about 122. My body fat percentage was 24% five weeks ago. I am going to have my trainer check it again next week to see if anything has changed.
I'm getting frustrated and not sure what to do next. I will not give up my primal diet because I know it is a healthier way to eat. But why does it work for so many others and not me?
Your diet sounds healthy from what you said. You're getting a good amount of fat too I hope? I admit that I take top-notch vitamin supplements too though have cut back on the ammount. You work out way more than me. I work out for an hour once or twice a week. I've noticed that my weightloss stalls out or regains if I work out too much (and no it's not just the weight from building new muscle.) It could be possible that the dairy isn't working for you or might be something to try not having for awhile to see if it helps. What type of dairy are you having? I stay away from milk or anything low-fat. So it's cheese, cream & cream-on-the-top yoghurt that I have sometimes.
Maybe if you post a typical day for you, someone with more experience could lend their input to see if anything looks imbalanced?
CJ, ive been there too. I was gf for 8 years before embracing a 100% paleo diet. My diet was already very clean- I rarely ate pocessed gluten free foods or the gf baked sugar bombs. Your workout plan sounds great IMO, and also very close to my own.
The first month I noticed clearer skin, more energy. Second month, significantly less inflammation over my body, and then I started noticing more muscle definition (in my calves first, then arms, then a flatter stomach)
Hang in there, I am wiling to bet 90 days you will start seeing physical differences. You may want to take photos to compare, they are subtle at first.
Also, make sure you get enough quality sleep- that was very important for me.
Thank you for posting. I have been GF for 8 years and went paleo and started doing CF almost 2 months ago. No change on the scale at all, and i think i am feeling better. i dont think i get that crash around 3pm as bad, but the physical changes are not there. i am trying to remind myself it takes time, and i just need to stick to my high protien and fat, low carbs paleo diet and it will get better. just not happening as fast for me as other people who went paleo and had dramatic results right away. the lack of sugar cravings is pretty awesome though.
