I think I might have some kind of lactose intolerance. Does anyone in a similar situation drink milk with the lactose taken out? Is there anything unhealthy about this?
Some with lactose intolerance tolerate it fine, others do not. Unfortunately, to find out, you'll have to experiment on yourself. If you tolerate coconut milk, it's what I would suggest.
Have you tried raw milk if you are able to get it? I was amazed at the difference between raw milk and the overly treated crap they pass off as milk. My niece does great on raw milk, but can't drink pasteurized.
I don't have an answer to your question, sorry ~ but I have a story to tell.
I have been feeling better lately and have decided to re-introduce organic grass-fed milk and kefir.
I had a pack one day. Another pack on another day. Then another pack the next day. And then lactose-free cheese. And then I felt much much worse and all my symptoms that I worked so hard to alleviate came back to me. So now I am back to square one.
Primal just does not work for me. If you are healthy - go ahead and drink all you want. Lactose or not. But if you have any kind of health problems - the heck with dairy. Your health is not worth it.
You can reduce the lactose in your raw milk by clabbering (let it sit out at room temperature until it thickens and sours. The lactose is digested by bacteria into lactic acid. The end product is a Kefir-like probiotic drink.
