I have been eating paleo for 3 months. During the first month I lost 8 pounds and was really happy with the eating plan. Since that time, I have not been able to lose a single pound. In fact, I have gained 3 pounds. I have tried everything I can think of and am now looking for suggestions/advice.
A typical day eating wise looks like this:
Breakfast: 2 scrambled eggs with 3 pieces of bacon Lunch: spinach salad with hard boiled eggs, avocado, grilled chicken and olive oil & balsamic viengar (sometimes I add fresh mozzarella) Dinner: a piece of grilled meat (either flank steak, london broil or chicken) plus grilled mushrooms
Snack: cashews (I have recently cut out cashews as I have read on this site that they can inhibit weight loss)
As for exercise, I follow a 4 day on, 1 day off philosophy.
Day 1: Run 30 minutes plus arm workout Day 2: Bike 45 minutes plus leg workout Day 3: Interval jog/sprint 25 minutes plus 45 minutes walking Day 4: Bike 45 minutes Day 5: OFF
I am desperate for help! I should add that I get about 7.5 hours of sleep every night. I have also never experienced the full feeling that people talk about. I am always hungry. I am convinced something is wrong with me! I know you all must get sick of these types of questions but I really have no where else to turn for advice. If I am doing something wrong, I would like to fix it. Oh also, I need to lose at least 15 pounds to be within a healthy BMI, although I would like to lose 25 in order to fit into my clothes again. So it's not like I don't have much to lose.
What you are eating looks pretty good to me. Mostly good, but ditto needing more fats. Dropping the cashews was a good move. You might consider dropping the cheese also. If you aren't already, start a log to keep track of any hidden things that might be creeping in around the edges. And to check your calories. Odd as it sounds, you may not be eating enough calories.
Eating an even larger high protein breakfast is likely to help with the hunger. Try going to 3 eggs and a hunk of higher protein meat (leftover steak, burger). See if that helps.
And (just looked at your exercise!) add some carbs before/after your exercise + protein after. Sweet potatoes and egg whites* are often recommended by the athletes around here.
I don't know how long you've been eating paleo, but it is often a bit slower for women to start losing weight. In the mean time, important hormonal changes are taking place. Allow the time.
Since you are excersizing a lot, you could be building muscle which is denser than fat tissue. If your clothes are looser despite the lack of weight loss, be happy! You are gaining muscle.
Let's get some more stats on you too. How old are you? Male or female? Are you overweight (by how much?) Obese? Bigger boned? What are your goals?
Depending on some of these variables, it may take longer/sooner than others. Secondly, weight loss is often a side affect and not THE net of going Paleo. I've heard many people experiencing all the other health benefits FIRST, then slowly the wieght comes off (could take up to two years. It's NOT a "get skinny quick" fad diet. A lifestyle!
Getting your gut in order and corrected can take time. THEN you may start experiencing the "qucker" weight loss. If you're looking to get ripped and on the cover of GQ or Shape Magazine, it's gonna be more difficult, but after you get things in order you can attempt to shoot for this.
How's your water intake? 1/2-1oz per oz of body weight per day. I know that when I don't take in adequate water I don't lose at all. More veggies and no fruit. If you do cardio I would always do intervals. Strength training at least 3 days a week. I struggle to lose as well. I have been paleo for almost 2 years. The best effect for me is feeling better because my body is getting what it needs. Good luck, your not alone!
My experience was somewhat similar. When i first went paleo, i lost about 8 pounds, and my primary form of exercise was running about 12-14 miles per week (3-4 miles 3-4 times per week). My weight plateaued and i was not really feeling much better / stronger.
Without changing my diet at all, i switched from running to strength exercises such as kettlebells, burpees, calisthenics, etc. I focsed my workouts on brief, intense, "to exhaustion" exercises, 3-4 times per week but lasting only about 20-30 minutes each session.
I broke through my plateau and very quickly lost about 10 pounds and 3 belt sizes, eventually losing about 5 more pounds. I felt fantastic, had better muscle tone, and many people said I looked a lot better.
Clearly, running was not working for me. I feel that certain body types just need the brief, high intensity workouts. If you are up for it you could also try crossfit, which i recently started, which is pretty tough but the results have been quick and satisfying for me.
Ahhh... I may know what your problem is. It could be you are unable to lose weight because you need to clean out a few specific toxins in your body. These toxins can get stuck in your liver and make it virtually impossible for your body to effectively respond do a diet (let alone handle cheat days!)
There are several methods to detox your body. This video should explain it further. Detox Your Body!
I have personally had good results from using a selection of spices with lemon juice. But that is a homemade recipe! The video should be much more help.
Body composition improvement is what you are after.
Here is the first of a series of free workouts on you-tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69ol43VYgr8
This girl has the best total body workouts I have ever seen. She has about 45 of them on you-tube for free. They do more than improve body composition - they improve all aspects of fitness, including balance, coordination, and elasticity. Not just endurance, strength, and flexibility. She works all of the various movements a body can make. Her background is that of Russian gymnast, but she brings those training principles down to earth, and combines them with others, in these free videos - I don't believe they will be free for long.
