I had to take a round of antibiotics (cipro) for a very nasty bladder infection. I took a ton of probiotics during and for few days after. have kept up with yogurt and kombucha since then. despite this I have had pretty much constant gas (sometimes quite smelly, but not always) for 2 weeks now. any ideas on what else I can do to get my gut back in order?
Up the quality of the probiotics. Make your own kefir. Buy Natren probiotics (a relatively expensive brand I use, but I notice a big difference with it. It's high-caliber stuff.) If you're strictly paleo, I can't imagine another cause of the gas besides unbalanced intestinal flora. Others feel free to chime in.
I recently spent 4 days reading studies on IBS and other gut problems. Many of the papers noted that benefits from probiotics are strain-specific. I remember at least a handful of studies where one strain showed benefit while another one had no effect. So not all probiotics are created equal.
Strains also vary in how well they can colonize the gut. This is a real issue with probiotics. Because many of them are just passing visitors in the gut. They cannot colonize therefore they only help while you are taking them - if even then.
The problem is that most manufacturers don't state what strains they use. And there's not enough research yet to say for sure which strains are helpful for which condition.
This is why it's better to eat a wide variety of fermented foods (as you do) and also make sure you eat prebiotic foods. Those help the existing gut flora recover faster.

leveofloxicin rather than ciprofloxicin would have been the better choice. levo spares the gut flora because its absorbed befor it gets to that location. your doctor new this but the cipro is cheaper. time to change docs?
The antibiotic levels were built up in your system, so it will take a little time for things to return to a non-toxic level. After that, things will return to normal. All the probiotics may, in fact, be hindering things by colonizing your gut in an unbalanced fashion. I'd cut back on them and let things recover naturally. I've taken antibiotics many times in my life, and I never use probiotics to recover. I've never had lengthy gas-spells, so I can only conjecture that the probiotics are the issue here.
