I freeze mine until ready to use and throw them in a crockpot with filtered, flouride free water and some vinegar for a day or two.

I've never thought about washed bones. I roast them @350 for like an hour.

You can give the bones a rinse if they seem grungy, if you like, but excessive/prolonged washing is not necessary. They will be cooked far beyond the ability of any critters to survive.

i roast whole chickens with some frequency, so that is one easy source. i buy many cuts on the bone, partially because they are way more flavorful, but also to stockpile in the freezer until i fill a gallon freezer bag and can no longer seal it. cover with filtered water and a few tablespoons of ACV, peppercorns and a few bay leaves. I do wash marrow bones. The reason is, there are these bone chips that you don't want to go into your broth. These are very small yet sharp and even washing them doesn't necessarily get all the chipped bones out. I assume the chips are caused by the mega saw blade cutting through these marrow bones. I don't have any problems with any bones other than marrows.

Mambo, if you filter your broth through a cheesecloth covered strainer you won't need to worry about bone chips or any other solid. You will just get the broth. – Julie Aug 18 at 3:36
That's a good idea but my broth also contains bits of the marrow core, ligaments, tendons, etc. which I detach from the marrow bones. – Mambo Aug 19 at 1:18

Bone broth = nasty. Eat a good paleo lemon bar (you can get the recipe at Jimmy Moore's site).
