This is my sixth day on the Paleo diet, and honestly it's been pretty easy. However, I live in a household who is not on the paleo diet. I naturally get a few brief cravings every once in a while, but right now I just want to eat my whole refrigerator.
How do I subdue sugar cravings?
It kind of depends why you chose the paleo was. Is it because you want to lose weight, benefit health wise or another reason?
If you are not doing this just lose weight then I say don't resist the sweet craving but embrace it with 'natures candy' - dates You can even make your own chocolates using diced dates, shredded coconut, cacao and cashew nuts
If you are on it to lose weight then don't lose heart, fruits like raspberries, cranberries and blackberries are generally lower in carbs than other fruits
What I found that really helped me the first few weeks was concentrating on all the yummy foods I could eat that I had always deprived my self
In the past I've found that when I give into sugar cravings by eating something else, even if it's healthy stuff like a hard boiled egg, I tend to eat more and binge. This may sound cliched but it helps if I brush my teeth and busy myself with something else. More often than not the craving is a mental thing, and I don't feel it anymore after brushing my teeth.
It will really help you in the future if you don't give into your cravings. Instead, deal with them head on and try to think about them as just a minor annoyance and let them pass. That way you'll learn the difference between real physical hunger and just cravings brought on by visual cues / timing cues / etc. At least that's the way it's worked for me, as someone who is prone to stuffing 5 whole bananas down my mouth when a sugar craving hits.
One of the best ways to deal with sugar cravings is to eat some fat and protein. Seriously, and you won't have that drop in blood sugar that will bring on another wave of cravings. I like to choose something that feels really decadent and treat-like. For me that might be garlic shrimp sauteed in lots of coconut oil. For others it's something quite different.
Try making paleo sweet stuff. For example, I made ice cream recently from eggs, coconut milk, berries and cinnamon. To sweeten it a bit you can always use raw honey which is favorable to sugar by tons. You can also make all kinds of other sweet awesome desserts without going back to crappy refined sugar products. just stick at it though, in a week or 2 you will start to feel so good that you will not even consider going back to eating a Standard American Diet anymore. Goodluck!
