Hi PaleoHackers --

I am putting together something sort of fun around Paleo products for fitness and for the kitchen. This could be things like Vibrams or cookware or foods.

Would love your input.

Barefoot (or near-barefoot, in the case of Virbrams) running is very paleo. – Tyler F Aug 20 at 2:03

I mean no disrespect, but attaching the name paleo to products of moderin civilization is farcical, imho. And your reason that Vibrams are "paleo" is because they facilitate barefoot running is a slippery slope. By this reasoning, Trojan, Rayban, Speedo, and Calvin Klien are all paleo because sex, keeping the sun out of our eyes, swimming, and covering our genitalia are all "paleo." So are commercial tanning salons, because vitamin D absorption through the skin is paleo. The list goes on to incorporate virtually every single product made by man, because there's some reason it is paleo. – foreveryoung Aug 20 at 14:16

@foreveryoung, you make some good points, but you could use a slightly thicker skin. – Amy B. Aug 20 at 19:10

I'd just like to point out that the "slippery slope" is something of a fallacy, particularly in this context. EVERYTHING we call paleo is paleo only as a contemporary label we choose to apply based on a pretty arbitrary set of criteria. We do not, in fact, live in paleolithic times, therefore nothing is paleo. Not even our precious grass-fed cows--nor buying them at the market rather than hunting them. Vibrams (hideous as they are) are as paleo as grass-fed beef. – Christopher Gagnon Aug 20 at 19:22

I must say that "paleo products" had the non-sequitor bells ringing in my head. – Dave S. Aug 20 at 19:30

Cannot come up with anything else, sorry.

Here's my list, in no particular order, and I'm omitting kitchen stuff because there are so many already listed elsewhere on PH:

  • Vibram 5 fingers (or other barefoot minimalist shoes)
  • Foam rollers
  • BioLite Camp stove (a backcountry wood stove that cooks your food and charges your phone/GPS/ipod)
  • Voodoo flossing bands
  • Rubberbandz crossfit/pull up bands
  • Goal Zero Solar panel and charging battery pack
  • Make your own mead
  • Activated Charcoal Soap Handmade by Rocky Top Soap Shop
  • a tractor tire to flip around
  • Anything from Smartwool or Icebreaker = sustainable, ethical merino wool clothes and socks
  • Survival Wisdom & Know How: Everything You Need to Know to Thrive in the Wilderness
  • an axe from Best Made or Gränsfors Bruks

I'm skeptical about that Emerald Cove Nori. I've heard it's Chinese Nori, which is notorious for being produced in areas that are heavily polluted by industrial waste. I'd recommend SeaSnax instead. Then again, if anyone knows that Emerald Cove is clean stuff, I'd love to hear about it. – Elunah Aug 21 at 16:54
Hm. That's disturbing. I'll look into it. Thanks for the heads up. – Marcy Aug 21 at 17:18

For my money, the best paleo products are the ones endorsed on Jimmy Moore's blog - http://livinlavidalowcarb.com/blog/. Personally vetted by the father of paleo himself - Mr. Moore - you know you're getting real primal products. And if he doesn't have the kinds of products you're looking for, well, you don't need 'em then.
