I had ceviche made with imitation crab and fish, and I notice that maybe an hour later my current acne started to itch. Can crab or fish cause acne or make it worst?

Also, I don’t know if its coincidence, but my face started to clear up, only had a couple of inflamed pimples, then I went camping and had quite a bit of clams, oysters, and shrimp and I broke out, but I don’t know if this is just coincidence.

History- I have been trying the Paleo diet for almost a month, I decided to try it to see if it would help with my cystic acne and other digestive issues. I am still learning about the foods I should and should not consume and keeping a food diary. I have been feeling so much better on this diet no more gas, bloat, constipation and cramps!

Yeah, imitation crab contains gluten. That's where I'd put my money. I can't stand that stuff anyway.

Imitation crab is a highly processed food. It's like you're eating a seafood hot dog with added sugar, starch, gluten, and other additives. It wouldn't surprise me that it may cause acne. Try to eat foods with as little ingredients and processing as possible. I'm sure you'll notice a difference.

you may have an allergy to seafood, or maybe just shellfish

or maybe it's because some (maybe all) imitation crab meat contains gluten, or so I've been told. I have celiac disease so watch what I eat pretty carefully.

Lots of imitation crab meat also has soy. Both potent allergens. – BoneBrothFast Aug 21 at 1:07

Imitation crab (Surimi) is made out of a whole-mess o' crap, i would recommend you stay away from it.

Can't speak to the imitation crab but an excess of iodine causes acne flare ups for some people. Plug iodine in to the search engine here to read more. I think Melissa McEwen has some answers relating to this?

Yes, this is true as well, however it's not the iodine breaking them out. It's bromine being pushed out. Iodine detoxes bromine. – BoneBrothFast Aug 21 at 1:08
Interesting! I'll look more into that. – Marcy Aug 21 at 1:49

No, but it can definitely cause nausea.

As a fellow acne sufferer, I can tell you eating paleo helps since gluten is a definite culprit in acne flare ups. And yes, imitation crab is full of gluten, so stay away from it.

You are correct to say you need to start paying attention to the reactions you get from food. I personally have acne flare ups with nuts, too much seafood (iodine), coconut products, and avocados. I have not figured out exactly why these foods cause my skin to break out, but my assumption is an inflamed, possibly leaky gut from years of eating gluten so I am not breaking down something in those foods. My next step is to do a full gut healing protocol that includes making homemade bone broth from the bones of grass fed animals.

Keep on the path. Once you clean up your diet, it becomes very obvious which foods are causing you problems.

Sounds like you had an allergic reaction. I'd stay away from imitation (anything) since they are full of additives.
