Does anybody do it? It seems like the perfect Paleo exercise (slow, whole body, Sisson-endorsed). What's it like? How difficult? Would you recommend it to somebody with no experience?
Please don't do it in the surf zone! It can be as easy or as difficult as you want based on how big or how small of a board you get. In my opinion lessons are a waste of hard earned money, overpriced. I'm far from an expert on it or anything but its all really common sense and you can easily read tips/tricks online. I'd borrow a friends or find one used. Functionally a used one will be close to the same as a new one, most of them are epoxy. Biggest thing to watch out for is, as someone else mentioned, the current. A lot of people have to get towed back home on Jet Ski. A day with very little wind is best, smaller the ripples in the water the better.
So this is coming from a complete n00b.
at the beach this summer I wanted to try it out. I signed up for a class ($75 for one hour training, then keep the board for the four more hours). It was harder than I expected to stand on the board (it's HUGE). Once I got up I found that forward movement helps to stabilize you. My problem was that I started with the current, coming back was a WORKOUT.
Definitely recommend. Was not that difficult. The next day my lower-outer back (like the back of my obliques) was SORE.
