Do you ever snack? (Paleo friendly of course)

I'm rather new to all this and have been doing really well eating 3 Paleo meals a day and haven't often felt a need for between meal snacks but there is the off day where I am hungry before a meal. Is there a good reason to abstain from snacking on the rare occasion I feel like I need one?

I really want to start off on the right foot here so any help would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

I think its good digestive policy not to snack generally (your MMC cleansing waves occur between meals). Its probably better for your leptin too, and regulation of appetite. But the occasional snack wont hurt I dont think. – Jamie Aug 22 at 3:13

I eat when i'm hungry, it doesn't matter what time it is, but i try not to eat 2 hours before exercising and 1 hour after.

and why is that? – CS Aug 22 at 12:32
2 hours before, so i am on a semi-fasted state, this makes stored fat, more available for burning. And 1 hour after, so food doesn't disrupt my levels of HGH (Human Growth Hormone) the best anti-oxidant known to man – Alvaro Aug 22 at 15:32

Everyone is different. Listen to your body and you won't go wrong.

It depends on what you mean by snack. I usually have two decent size meals per day - always dinner, and either lunch or breakfast. I don't like to fast, so I usually eat something, probably averages 250-500 calories, either in the morning or afternoon instead of a full-size meal. Call it two big meals and a snack or two big meals and one small meal.

Kinda depends on your goals and some self experimentation. If you're trying to lose weight it's probably best to avoid extra snacks most of the time.

My answer: I take the minimal rules "keep it simple" approach. I snack if/when I'm hungry and something good is handy. For me it's more about the What I eat than then When I eat.

I tend to snack on almonds and low glycemic fruit in small amounts. I do believe that there is less need or urge to snack when you are fat adapted like some say. I've had a tough time getting fat adapted thus I snack.

I agree with most. If you eat enough at your meals, snacking should be the furthest thing from your mind. I am on a 20/4 Intermittent Fast schedule, and other than a tablespoon of heavy cream in my morning coffee, don't eat until around 4 PM, then my main meal around 7 PM.

Occasionally, I'll skip the 4 PM food totally and just make it a 24 hour fast. No hunger, no cravings, no energy dips, just plain ol' goodness :)

could we set up a poll on paleohacks? women snackers versus men snackers? just curious. I used to snack as a crutch to make it through the day. not as much anymore although I love sweet potatoes by themselves, as a snack, not so much apples or bananas or other fruit. I know there are various reasons about why you should never do this, because there's no protein or fat, but it fills me up way more than a handful of nuts.

I'll have three meals/day and usually a light snack in the evening. I don't really feel the need to snack any other time in the day.

I eat 3 meals a day (sometimes 2, usually on the days I don't work out I try fasting for about 18-20 hours). No snacking for me, and most of the time I am not hungry enough to even consider it.

I think to myself snacking is evil, but I'm sure some people have schedules that absolutely require it.

Don't forget to eat enough! I don't know what your reason of not-snacking is? Do you want to eat something? Eat it! Your body is perfectly capable of signalling what foods it need. Except for carbs! So skip the carb snacks. I have a few cooked eggs in the fridge and almost always some baked meat or some leftover vegetables to eat. But I only need those if I eat a high-carb meal at a friends place or forgot to eat enough food the previous meal. Success!

"Your body is perfectly capable of signalling what foods it need. Except for carbs!" ----- don't you think that your statement is self-contradicting? - a rather hu-uge exception of a whole macronutrient group! ---- which is a proof that the body is NOT "perfectly capable of signalling" (my body always 'signals' me that it wants a snick*#s bar - a 'signal' i have learnt not to pay attention to or if otherwise - to ignore) – igel Aug 22 at 2:46
The snickers signal is your carb addiction. You are build to prefer carbs above fat and proteïn most of the time. If you didn't prefer carbs, which is for Grok equal to fruit in summertime, you didn't have the change to build up a nice layer of fat in your body to raise your changes for winter survival. That's why the hunger systems in your body prevent excessive eating for fat and protein (otherwise you would be overeating the year round) but NOT for carbs. Because you will overeat on carbs, Grok did build up a nice layer of fat before the winter kicks in. – Harmen Aug 22 at 8:13

I don't snack regularly, but if I'm hungry, I eat. If it's not mealtime, I guess that's snacking. I do not build snacks into my food plan. I do not, however, think it's a make it or break it choice.

I snack on coconut pieces, bananas and nakd bars occasionally. But way less than pre-paleo. I don't worry about snacking, if I feel like it I do.

before Paleo i used to constantly snack/eat and constantly felt full/sick. now that i eat more fat i am enjoying discrete meals and letting my body rest in between.

as a result i am having to change the foods i buy and prepare since i find i no longer eat them for snacks every few hours like i used to.
