I'm going to start applying to doctoral programs in nutrition this fall and am trying to consider programs with faculty amongst which I might find interest in ancestral-type diet interventions, or really anything related. Paleo sympathies and such. I have a few ideas so far, but since combing through faculty pages and Google scholar is a pain, I wondered if anyone on PH had some suggestions. I'm partially limited by places that offer the type of residency program my husband is seeking.

I know Chris Masterjohn is a PhD student in Nutrition at U. of Connecticut. He is a well-known Paleo advocate so it might be worth contacting him to see if the program has been a fit for him as well as asking about any others he would recommend.

Also, Loren Cordain, one of the initial advocates of Paleo is at Colorado State and might be a good contact for you.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips! I think Colorado was on my husband's list, too. – Blossom1 Aug 23 at 2:46
I meant to say, since it's on his list, it could work - not that I already was aware of Cordain's presence there. – Blossom1 Aug 23 at 3:01

Find a venue in which you are interested in publishing your work (high-quality, focused on things you care about). Look at the papers from the last two cycles of the venue. If you see a style of work that you like, apply to that school. Finally, you're working with an advisor, not a school (mostly), and just because somebody's good or smart doesn't mean they would be a good Ph.D. advisor.

Thanks for the advice! I actually already have a graduate degree in an unrelated field, so I'm somewhat comfortable with parts of the process. I may have been spoiled, though, by landing a stellar advisor with research interests very close to my own. I suppose I am just trying to feel out the scholarly environments for one in which I'll have some genuine support and enthusiasm. I've kept my interests pretty under wraps at my current institution because it would not be received well at all. :-) – Blossom1 Aug 23 at 2:59
