I have heard that the body has a natural detox mechanism that runs from about 4am to 10am, and that this detox process is disturbed when breakfast is taken before 10am. Is anyone aware of actual research that backs this up? I mean, I'm sure the body is always doing detox as needed, but supposedly this morning time period is especially important. Do you have any personal experience or scientific studies to share?
I heard another take on this recently, that actually encouraged eating pretty close to waking when bile production/digestive juices/liver function i.e. detoxing is at its peak so as to mobilize those juices and keep the pancreas working well. The theory being, fasting until the end of that window of peak function could potentially increase the risk for gallstones.
Both suggestions seem kinda woo woo me, certain traditional and/or new agey approaches to food and eating like to put things like "detoxing" and peak function of certain organs on an arbitrary 24 clock, where eat organ has its moment to shine and the others rest. Personally, I'm guessing that all of our organs can function and repair themselves well simultaneously.
There is certainly good science to back up respect for circadian rhythms, and you probably don't want to stay up all night stuffing your face, but I've yet to find a good reason to not eat breakfast when you are hungry for it, and on the flip side, forcing yourself to eat breakfast if you aren't hungry. Nor have I found anything to back up the assertions that individual organs require a specific hour of the day to rest and regenerate.
Somewhat related to this, personally, I will sometimes get 1-2 hunger pangs immediately upon rising, and then after actually being awake for 15-20 minutes I'm not hungry at all, and don't even think about food again for 2-3 hours. Having a bit of extra fat to burn, it is my suspicion that I've managed to just stay in that overnight body fat burning mode for a few more hours, and have eaten breakfast from my adipose tissue rather than the fridge. I think that initial pang is just an inquiry as to what's on the menu.
My understanding was always the 12hr detox window : 12hrs from your last meal before sleeping, and your next meal at breakfast being an ideal 'sleeptime' fasting window. I dont remember where i heard this, possibly Robb Wolffs podcast, so excuse my lack of solid reference.... Ive tried it, feels good to me nd kind of makes sense...
I believe a carrot a day is the most effective and cheapest detox.
