Hello guys,

I've been doing Paleo for a whooping 2 weeks now :) and my wife is beginning to see the value in it.

She is used to the energy/carbs she gets from bread in the morning: 2 slices of "whole" wheat bread (bad) plus some type of cheese (good).

Would you have any Paleo suggestions for someone transitioning to Paleo, providing her with the necessary energy? She's eating more Paleo meals during lunch and dinner. Breakfast is kind of a challenge so far.

I'm aware your responses may be "she needs to get used to eating more fat and protein", so I'm just checking if this is the answer, or if there's more to it :)

Thanks! Levy

Don't get caught up in the judgement call thing where certain non paleo foods are bad and paleo foods are good. Its really important not to weight food with projected stigma. Just enjoy what you eat and don't trip. You are eating mostly paleo and that is a good thing. You probably are getting results that your wife notices, but eating bread isn't bad nor does it make you a bad person. We are human. Focus on your fitness/lifestyle goals and do what works. Paleo changed my life. Lost 25lbs in 3months and running mile splits 2 minutes faster. I have left over bread from dinner party & am EatingIT – polynesian_metal Aug 30 at 19:25

Eating bread made me a bad person... – borofergie Aug 30 at 19:58
Ive been digging gluten free cornbread (bobs mills). It may not be paleo but I figure its a little better than bread and fills that need in the morning. – ancestral_stars Aug 30 at 21:00

Thanks polynesian_meal. She doesn't exercise these days, so maybe we will try to remove bread, so I hope, at least until target weight is reached. Paleo and more than that, eating smart, is doing wonders! – Levy Carneiro Jr Aug 30 at 21:32

The answer to everything is eggs and bacon.

Your wife will find that she doesn't need the glucose kick from bread in the morning once she's fat-adapted. The transition is pretty tough, though, so you might try using fruit to bridge the gap.

I love a baked sweet potato for breakfast. Put some butter and cinnamon on it - yum! They're super easy to make, too: just microwave for 5 minutes (turn it over halfway through). Sweet potatoes are carbs, but they're non-toxic Paleo-friendly carbs (no gluten/other gut irritants, high in nutrients). I eat it with 3-4 hard-boiled eggs.

Like your wife, I don't do low-carb well. It doesn't mean I can't do Paleo!

I was one of those people who really, really LOVED my bread in the morning. I went cold turkey into Paleo and switched to bacon and eggs. However, I do like to have half an avocado with them or on days when I feel like I need more energy (or on the weekends) shredded sweet potato hash. I don't miss bread!

I had a similar issue during my transition. Check out a honey and nut granola, I love this recipe - http://civilizedcavemancooking.com/grain-free-goodies/caveman-crunch/

My answer would depend on what you consider Paleo/Primal or close enough for a transition period. I usually keep my "carb-bombs" for night cause that's what works better for me, but sometimes on days off (when it doesn't matter so much if I get sleepy from big carb-load) I'll eat a potato with breakfast. I usually eat my beloved eggs and bacon, or eggs and sardines, and I'll fry up (usually in bacon grease) a home-shredded potato for hashbrowns to go with it.

For less of a carb-bomb but still some carbs, try some fruit with the protein and fat.

Thanks Luckie. If I may, if you are in your best/target weight, do you know if potatoes make you gain weight, or if not, how much carbs from potato would you recommend per day w/o affecting weight. I know, the one million dolar question :) – Levy Carneiro Jr Aug 30 at 21:28

I can't eat eggs, so my breakfast is:

one banana sliced and two types of berries, in a bowl, with a giant hunk of almond butter mixed in. Kinda like "cereal".

glass of kefir.

Wonderful, that sounds like she! Thanks Renee! – Levy Carneiro Jr Aug 30 at 21:25

I don't eat breakfast, ever. But whenever I need energy, I eat fat in one form or another.

I eat eggs almost every day for breakfast, but they don't necessarily resemble your normal fried egg. Have her give this sweet, "crepe" a try

In the magic bullet I blend 2-3 eggs with a bit less than 1TBS of coconut flour, healthy dash of cinnamon and a little almond extract (vanilla works as well). With this mixture make 2 crepes over medium heat in your fat of choice (don't be tempted to flip too early, you want them to set all the way through prior to lightly browning the opposite side). While the crepes are cooling I make a very quick fruit compote in the same pan... fat of choice, a handful of fruit, small drizzle of honey and a drop or two of extract. Blueberry is especially delicious. Smother your crepes in the compote and dig in! I often add coconut flakes to the top as well

Hope you enjoy, Cheers to you both!
