Turmeric greatly improves my sluggish digestion and impossible constipation, and I take a tablespoon with each meal. It is a fact that certain spices such as cinnamon and cloves can cause significant liver damage if used in excess. How much turmeric is too much? (I am a recovering alcoholic, so I want to minimize my potential for liver damage as much as humanly possible.)
Always take your turmeric with black pepper. I honestly would not worry too much about turmeric and hepatotoxicity. But if you're worried about it, take magnesium. Magnesium is good for the liver AND improves digestion and pooping.
I am going to try this. I think there is still a tupperware full of turmeric in my spice cupboard from some experiment long ago. I am also an alcoholic, still attempting to recover.
I take turmeric every morning.
Breakfast: 1/2 tumbler of dried coconut flesh (no preservatives) mixed with 2 egg yolks + glug of kefir + 1/3 teaspoon of turmeric with fresh ground black pepper. Keeps me going for hours.
A tablespoon seems alot. I'd put that much in my meatloaf recipe, which gives about 10 portions - any more and the recipe becomes too turmeric.
Sounds like you're supplementing with the spice, rather than just making it a normal part of your diet. I have looked into turmeric on the evidence-based paleo-style blogs, and I don't think any of them give warnings about too much of the stuff. Glad I could be of "help".

I don't know how much turmeric is too much. But I can tell you that I've been taking turmeric every day, 1 or 2 teaspoons. I put it in my morning scrambled eggs and on potatoes, carrots and pumpkins. I also use ginger and cinnamon. No problem so far and my general inflammation seems to be reduced.
Of course is not just turmeric or cinnamon to work magic but just a piece of a perfect puzzle. At least for me.
I have been taking 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric twice daily in warm milk, First one in the morning in my cappuccino coffee,easy to drink ,its something you get used to and at night just a glass of milk in the microwave for 2 min and add the turmeric,stir and drink,tastes fine. I have chronic pain in my lower back and it seems to be doing the job.

As far as improving your digestive system: Give yourself a weekend to do a juice fast. Drink nothing but water and freshly squeezed juice (or you can buy sunsweet's prune juice, its 100% natural not from concentrate). This will give your digestive system a break, I am sure it needs one if you are having some issues. After your fast start out your mornings by drinking 1 liter of water before you have any bit of food, coffee, tea, etc. Make sure it is purified and luke warm. This will go straight down to your intestines and allow a rapid evac! Then start your breakfast off with just fruit. Dont mix certain fruits though. The fruits you don't want to mix are acid fruits with sweet fruits. You can however mix acid fruits with sub acid fruits. Sweet fruits can be mixed with sub acid fruits as well. If you are eating a melon make sure not to mix them with anything, not even other melons.
Starting your breakfast with a melon fruit is another sure sign of having to go to the bathroom shortly after. Melons will get absorbed directly into the intestines.
When you eat fruit in the morning though make sure not to eat anything else for about an hour. This will allow the fruits to make things move smoothly throughout the digestive tract.
Also look into using psyllium husk. I personally have not used it, but it will absorb all the toxins in your body and push it straight out. Make sure to drink plenty of water though as it will bulk up quick. Do more research on the husk though. I am doing some myself.

Turmeric can be dangerous in large quantities... it can cause nauzea, diarhea and liver demage as well as make gallbladder problems worse as it stimulates production and release of bile. Everything in moderation is best. About quarter teason two-3 times a day is plenty for health, more doesn't mean better.
I have serious gluten intolerance, hepatitis C from major surgery after damaging my liver and pancreatic bile ducts from a surfboard accident. Have have had high blood pressure for about 10 years; no herbs seemed to help, after 3 yrs. of trying. Have had scary heart palpitations--emergency rm. blood tests always showed a magnesium deficiency over the past couple yrs. Had one seizure three wks. ago and that blood test still showed a mag. deficiency. Since, I've now cut out all corn products that was causing great inflammations and arthritis. Now taking slow release magn. and a fizzing magn. called CALM (all these when I remember--trying twice a day). Combined turmeric, powdered ginger, powdered beet, and bee pollen together (about two full teas. a day--a.m. and p.m.). I have much more energy, my mind is more clear, I haven't taken any blood pressure medicine in one week and my readings are: 102/71, 110/75, 123/79, 111/75, 112/75, 103/68, (one really low 85/62), 135/80, 116/77, 123/75, 118/69... I believe the combination food supplements I described and the magn. have improved my health all the way around, plus giving up the corn products (#1 for causing inflammation according to some books).
