I did too :( In fact, as I am typing this, I am eating rich and creamy all-natural vanilla ice-cream. And I am happy. Oh well, tomorrow is another day. – VB Sep 1 at 18:16
How long have you been Paleo? – April S. Sep 1 at 18:34

HB - in my experience, exhaustion with the diet/lifestyle tend to happen when you're newer to Paleo/Primal, or just not ready to fully commit to it for life. Not attempting to poke fun, just speaking from experience; as I was back-and-forth Paleo for over a year (including a Whole30) before settling nicely into a 90/10 compliance ratio with minimal effort. Nowadays, I can't even will myself to cheat (with the exception of rara, small amounts of "healthier" sugars) when I'm by myself, it has to be a worthwhile cheat and typically involves an outing with friends. – W1ld Sep 1 at 18:43
rara = rare* my bad – W1ld Sep 1 at 18:44
it happens, meh – Sunshine Sep 1 at 20:45

Paleo is not about deprivation, just Paleo-fy ALL of the items you listed as follows:

Make homemade chips-- just fry up some potatoes (or sweet potatoes) in some lard, suet, or coconut oil

Ice cream: If you do dairy, make your own with some grassfed cream, eggs, vanilla and add some sugar, if you must-- if you don't do dairy, make it with coconut milk instead or blend frozen bananas with some berries.

Chocolate: Dark chocolate-- or, even milk chocolate (again, if you do dairy), is totally fine

Milk: Just opt for high quality-- or fermented or goat milk or coconut/almond/rice milk :)

That said, a cheat here and there is fine-- it's not about perfection, it's about doing better, that's all.

Make homemade chips -- Kale Chips are awesome! Ice Cream -- Use Stevia instead of sugar. Homemade Dark with Sea Salt and Poblano Peppers. – CD Sep 1 at 19:09
Raw milk is great when you feel like variety is needed to keep sane, and you want a bit of extra carbs. – Meatymichael Sep 1 at 20:48
+ one for kale chips as potato chip substitute (just toss chip-sized pieces of kale with olive oil and salt, then bake until crispy; see internet for many recipes) – Julie Sep 24 at 16:43

I drink milk, so when I get like this I sauté some berries in brown butter and serve with whipped cream.

But the rest I can do without. I am so much healthier and happier than I was. What's the point of a few seconds of enjoyment if it means living that way...

If you do it right, berries are way better than I've cream – JakeA Sep 1 at 18:41

HolyGrassFeed, Grok! I'm so drooling. It never occurred to me to saute berries in butter. O.My.FSM. I'm SO doing that. – November Sep 2 at 23:59
Not just butter, brown butter -- simplyrecipes.com/recipes/how_to_brown_butter -- it adds a nutty, autumn taste. So good – CD Sep 3 at 11:16

My binges consist mostly of eating too much fruit. I started Paleo on April 23, and haven't had craving for any SAD food since.

How can you be sick of eggs, steak and bacon?!?!?! :)

Try averaging 5 a day, most days, for 3 years. I'm, personally, ready for berries and pork chops. – Satchmo Oct 1 at 4:13

I think you need more recipes then -- if you have delicious recipes that you really enjoy, you won't get tired of it. Go online and explore... that's how I got all my delicious recipes. I've never been tired of my food... other than when I make a large batch of something and have to eat it all myself.

Can't say I have had this problem.. For a while I was eating nothing other than eggs boiled plain, plain potatoes steamed and with heinz mustard on them, and random fruits throughout the day.. I did this for a good two months and never got sick of it. I still could but at the time I needed to save more money, and right now i'm happily spending on various meats and things..

I can't relate to this. Paleo foods, specifically fat, are simply heaven on earth.

I get like that a lot. I'm not as bad as I used to be, though. You need to find paleo foods that you really like. when you think about it, there are tons of different kinds of meat, veggies, nuts, etc. Also, I personally have a little dairy, especially really old cheese. Just a sprinkle adds much flavour.

But anyway! I'm also not against paleoified SAD foods. I know some people are. But seriously, what's better? Paleo pizza or SAD pizza? sometimes I do get bad cravings and if I don't have the paleo version, I know I'm just going to have the SAD version (and MUCH MORE of it).

Also, I'm learning what are major trigger foods and what aren't (in regards to SAD foods) and how much or little I can handle of each SAD food. So now, I allow bits of not-so-healthy foods into my diet, and that's usually enough to keep the binges away (granted I still try to stay away from major triggers like wheat).

But knowing that I can have certain unhealthy foods if I really wanted to actually lessens the cravings, because it's not some forbidden thing. Once I tell myself I can have a bit of this or that, then I end up actually wanting to eat healthy food for health's sake. Then it's not something I have to do, but something I want to do.

Of course, I try to stay away from major trigger foods. But in general, I think the 80/20 rule works for paleo.

But yeah most importantly ~ FIND PALEO FOODS YOU LOVE. I think that's my most important advice. Just fool around with recipes and foods until you find those foods you love. :)

I occasionally picture a gooey lasagne, but there's no way I'd actually eat it or anything similar.

Sounds like you could use some variety in your meals. Have you tried any of the newer cookbooks? Just looking at the pictures should give you some ideas.

Buy a mandolin and make yourself some zucchini lasagna. You will never want the noodle version again – CD Sep 1 at 19:08
I do make all sorts of zucchini noodles, and you are right about them, CD. It's the thick, gooey cheese I miss. I can't eat dairy products at all. It's been years, and while I miss the tastes and textures, I don't miss the pain one little bit. – aseafish Sep 1 at 19:15
Try daiya. Not completely paleo but a damn good option for us 0 dairy-ers. – Jen Oct 1 at 4:29

Yes, I'm going through this right now. I've been pretty strict Paleo for 11 months (100% compliance with everything except some sugar here and there), and I'm fed up. Right now I have some nice beef, bacon, fruit, and veggies in the fridge, and frankly, I'd rather just not bother eating.

The only reason I haven't "cheated" SAD style is because I truly can't without serious health consequences (I'm both gluten and casein intolerant). If you can't have even one speck of wheat or dairy, then most fun SAD things are pretty much out. So, I've been drinking diet coke. It is my rebellion.

Hopefully I will snap out of this soon, but I don't see how that's going to happen.

You win! Using my senses, I sense the people I want to be like do not follow a Paleo diet.

While I wholeheartedly agree that food should have variety and taste good, I do believe that it should be to nourish our bodies, not our minds and spirit. I got myself into this fat mess by using food to feed my emotions, not my body. So I get where Meatymichael is coming from (well except the generational thing...).

"Eat all the junk food you want as long as you make it yourself." - Michael Pollan

Not the most "paleo" of quotes, but generally speaking, letting yourself "cheat" with limitations 1) makes sure what you eat is better than what you might otherwise splurge on, and 2) makes it not a frequent affair. I'm sure not going to pull out my lard and fry up a bunch of potatoes on a whim. I've got to really want it.

Also, I'd encourage getting more adventurous with other real foods. Keeps things fresh.

I'm with you on this one. I've been paleo since April and I'm sick of sweet potatoes, eggs, coconut milk, and expensive food. Unfortunately, I can't go off this diet or I'll be really sick. I'd love to go out to eat and not special order food or pick up a pizza on the way home from work, drink a margarita, eat at friends and not seem like a pain, and eat a big freaking bowl of popcorn. Just waiting for paleo chefs to figure out how to make paleo caramel.... Thank goodness for paleomg recipes. She saves me from true unhappiness.

Variety is for the mind, not the body. This generation has an obsession with putting food and entertainment into one. They are different things. Food is nothing more than fuel.

How is it only this generation? Food has been fetish-ized since the dawn of time. Humans can derive an enormous amount of pleasure out of food, hence the strong desire a variety of sensations. – JeJ Sep 1 at 21:29

So we shouldn't enjoy what we eat? Fail. – MathGirl72 Sep 1 at 22:11

Why would we have such refined taste buds if food is only fuel? Food can be both fuel and enjoyed. – Aaron Sep 1 at 22:34

Zach, if you choose to eat the plain foods you do, that's fine. It sounds like you enjoy it. I find it absurd to say food is nothing more than fuel and it should be separate from "entertainment." If I don't enjoy my food I am certainly not going to eat it. – MathGirl72 Sep 2 at 1:01

Smell is a POWERFUL sense and one that applies directly to food, this isn't a learned behavior, it's one that we all share, smells will calm us, excite us..most importatnly, it's something that joins us...ask most people what they think of when they smell freshly baked bread from the oven, with butter melting into it and real homemade jam smeared on it and watch how they recess back to a time of happiness...I mean sure that also makes them a bunch of dirty gluten eaters who can't be trusted...but you get the idea :-P Truth. – TruthinessInc Sep 2 at 20:31
