I was in it for ~3 months. I felt great had tons of energy...was never sore at first. But then i stopped recovering from workouts, got very cold, depressed, hungry, & fatigued. I didn't know what was wrong and went on huge carb binges ultimately gaining back about 15 lbs. I want to try it again with a more controlled carb feedings when I start to get sore.

this is the same thing that happened when i was anorexic - at first felt energetic and euphoric (a common effect of starvation), then cold, depressed and listless. the body wants to be fed. – Renee Sep 8 at 0:49
haha ..i got pretty thin on ketosis. I felt so good I forgot to realize the fact that I was starting to look like an Ethiopian. I felt like i was eating plenty of food...maybe not. – Andrew Sep 8 at 2:40
Pretty much a nightmare for me :) – Korion Sep 8 at 17:02

I was good in keto for a few months as well, then had the same issue. Right now I am very happy around 80g carbs daily, with one higher (around 150) day. I am a high level athlete, and usually do higher carb on days I am training twice per day.

I was also considering re-entering keto for the next 3 weeks before a competition...keep us posted on your progress!

Always been good. I haven't done it for more than a few months at a time, but I always feel great. I make same progress in the gym, sleep well, and have a noticeable mental boost. I'll probably go back to it soon to switch things up.

how do you stay in ketosis ?

I fasted for nearly to days, ran a bit for an hour and was in, but after a meal[green veggies, fish] and breakfast [15g of carbs] 6 hours later on, I am already out of urinary ketosis.

i actually unknowingly went into ketosis so i'm no expert. I'd have to say intense exercise with less than 50 carbs a day will do it. I know urinary ketosis sticks aren't too reliable. – Andrew Sep 8 at 0:06
From what little I've heard, urinary ketostix can be misleading. If you're burning the ketones for energy and not "wasting" them in your urine, they will indicate a lower level even though you may be producing and using more ketones. – Ryan Sep 8 at 18:04

I have tried keto only twice. First time i was on it for 3-4 months and i was feeling really sharp mentally almost superhuman level. It was as if i had complete control over my mind. Doing my engineering homework was a piece of cake. But it was a love-hate thing. During the day I was really angry and would snap at anything - lost a few friends during those months :(

The second time around I did it for two months and my reason was to achieve the same mental acuity as i had experienced before but instead i was somewhat depressed and the anger was still there. I think it may have something to do with adrenals as to why I didn't feel that 'unlimited energy' the second time.

In my experience keto also lowered my immunity because a fungal infection came back that was gone for more than a year. Added carbs and it went away.

At the end of the day everyone's body is different and experiemntation is the key to figuring out if it works for you. Unfortunately it can be difficult at times especially to your social life.

I personally believe keto is not something to be done permanently, from my experience it just doesnt seem/feel natural to purposely do it indefinitely.

Ketosis without bone broth usually won't work for an extended period.

I drink around 3 cups a day of broth, more on my protein restriction days. It is quite a hassle to constantly be making more, and bones are not easy to get these days, but I'd say it is essential.

Ketosis has brought me nothing but good things. Going into ketsis for me is like finally feeling healthy.

I get more mentally even in ketosis. I'm not lethargic, but I don't feel the need to bounce off the walls either. Atkins was the first treatment that worked for anxiety (and depression) and that was an accidental finding. This may be confounded by the drop in gluten intake. I've not tested whether my mood benefits are from ketosis or from GF.

Ketosis does not seem to affect my appetite to a noticeable degree except that being late for lunch is not agony. I don't lose weight just from reducing carbs anymore. :-(

Oh, my skin is a bit better in ketosis too.
