Being a college student, my budget is fairly limited so I do most of my shopping at Trader Joe's. I am only recently paleo and was wondering if any other frequent shoppers of TJ's could give me some handy advice on paleo foods to buy there. Grok on!

If your not allergic, eggs can make a great staple for your diet. Cheap, filling, and full of great nutrients.

Sweet potatoes can also be very cost effective. Eat them with plenty of butter so that you stay sated longer.

Sweet potatoes, potatoes, white rice, cheap meats...

Ask yourself:

  1. Is it paleo (or acceptable to me)?
  2. Is it calorie or nutrient dense for the price?
  3. Can I afford it?

Ask those 3 questions and you should come out with some good results. Don't worry about pastured/organic/grass-fed for now if you can't afford it (though with the right amount of effort a lot of folks actually can). Make sure you make good grades so you can afford it later :)

You can make your own mayonnaise and stuff like that to add a bunch of calories if needed.

Trader Joe's carries KerryGold butter.

Grass fed ground beef, frozen fish (and shellfish but we don't eat it), almond butter, almond milk, olive oil, 72% or greater chocolate, organic veggies, if you do dairy they have HWC, whole milk Greek yogurt, kerrygold butter (but their own brand of organic butter tastes BETTER for less money--wedid a taste test!), almond meal, stevia powder, fish oil and vitamin D3 capsules.

Sardines. One of the best brands I've found, good value at about $1.00 to $1.20 a can and a great source of protein and a little fat.

I've also found eggs to be of decent value at TJ's, barring that you can't find them locally.

I have yet to find any eggs at TJs that aren't soy and corn-fed. Is there a paticular brand you are recommending? – PaleoDel Sep 9 at 4:06

It is almost impossible to find corn and soy free eggs. Anywhere. You can try talking to local farmers to see if they do this, and/or would be willing to do so, but the eggs will be much more expensive. – AmandaLP Sep 9 at 13:23

like said above.... buy the healthiest meats you can afford.

on top of that... Sweet Potato can be very cost effective when you find yourself hungry and in your meal after your workout - mix in a little cinnamon and yum

A jar of coconut oil, $6.99 at our local TJs, will last a long, long time and has dozens of uses. It's a good use of your money.

You can buy canned sweet potatoes at $0.99 at Market Basket. Dunno if you have market basket, but you can canned sweet potatoes pretty cheap.

Go to The Vegetable Bin on east bay street. super cheap local in-season veggies and the old man that works there is the sweetest thing ever! if you find an awesome source of affordable veggies like this then you can save up for meats and other stuff

They very recently began carrying virgin coconut oil, which is great. Staples at TJs: kerrygold butter, their grassfed beef is eh but better than not having anything, organic chickens, almond butter, canned tuna, decent coffee, cheapo almond meal, 'chocolate lovers' 85% chocolate for $1.49!!!! Cheap Tom's toothpaste, wine for under $5, and organic produce that's nearly the same price as other supermarkets.

In the fall they also have sugar pumpkins, which are awesome for roasting and making soup!!
