Hemorrhoids that is...

Been paleo plus rice and potatos for over a year. In the last 5 month I've developed really bad 'roids and poo that looks like number one on the poo chart. I can't explain why it started...there was no change in my diet.

I am now 5 days into a W30 with the wifey and though I'm eating veggies like a mad man....no change. It actually seems worse.

Sample meal: Breakfast: 3 eggs, 2-3 strips beef bacon, 1/2 avocado Snack: 1/4 cup cashews/macadamia Lunch: coconut curry (cauliflower, carrots, butternut squash, onions, chicken) over a bed of sautéed kale Snack: sweet potato with bacon +1/2 avocado Dinner 12 oz ribeye with heaping serving of sautéed kale

I now poo every other day... And when I do, they lookand feel like small round sand paper rocks. For the hell of it, I ate a HUGE salad last night and today my bum feels like I stuck barbed wire in it.

I have no ibs or gurd. I've tried prep h, suppositories, 2% hydrocortisone... I'm so dang frustrated... ARG!

I would appreciate any advice/help.

Peace PH!

Go fiber-less. Eat fat and protein, but don't eat fiber. See if you notice less digestive issues then.

would never have thought to do this. should i stop eating veggies? – tbonesteak Sep 9 at 19:37
The fiber is what gives your stool most of its bulk. Fat and protein are very easy to digest and don't have much left over to expel, but our bodies cannot digest cellulose/fiber, thus a very bulky stool. Fiber also absorbs a LOT of water, making BMs dry and painful; this will happen even if you drink (what most consider to be) a large amount of water. – Sami Sep 9 at 19:52
Cut out 90% of your daily veggie amount until it becomes easy to poop without pain, then wait another week or two. Let your butt recover. :) Introduce one or two veggies back in at a time; it could be only the kale that causes the back-up, or the squash, etc. Hemorrhoids will not go away 100% and can be exacerbated by many things, but if you can figure out what causes them and avoid that, you won't even remember they existed. Good luck! – Sami Sep 9 at 20:00
I wouldn't cut out soluble fibre if the issue is dysbiosis as the production of SCFA's are important for gut health. – Alec Sep 10 at 9:38
thank you! i will have to try this and see how i react. 7 days into a whole30 so it will have to wait though. – tbonesteak Sep 11 at 18:33

Perhaps try fermented raw dairy, sauerkraut or vsl3 for a while. It may be a gut flora issue.

If an increase in vegetable fibre worsens things, it may be 'slow transit constipation'. But I would try the probiotic approach before seeking a doctor.

To avoid 'roids do not strain. Google is your friend re: how to avoid this.

I'm confused - what kind of constipation ISN'T "slow transit"? Isn't that pretty much the definition of constipation? Also yes to not straining. For me, squatting on the toilet is key. – Renee Sep 9 at 13:07
im doing the whole30 so im not doing dairy at this moment. as for straining, i try not to. i spend 15-30 minutes a day trying to let it pass on it's own. it just feels terrible b/c of the whole sandpaper rocks coming out feeling.... ug! :( – tbonesteak Sep 9 at 19:39
@Renee No. STC is a specific condition diagnosed by transit study. I mention it because fibre is usually ineffectual/problematic in those cases. – Alec Sep 10 at 9:44

Try snacking on a couple of teaspoons of unsweetened dessicated coconut - works well for me!

i will have to try this if i can find it. is it easily available? trader joes or whole foods? ive never seen coconut labeled dessicated before. – tbonesteak Sep 9 at 19:40
Dessicated = dried – judybot Sep 9 at 20:04
Yes, dried finely shredded unsweetened coconut (I'm an Aussie). It is usually found in the baking ingredients section near the dried fruit. – Red Robin Sep 11 at 1:31
ah ic, thank you for the clarification. i see it all the time at the store. i will give this a go this week! – tbonesteak Sep 11 at 18:35

Are you drinking enough water? You need about 8-12 glasses of water a day which is a rough estimate and doesn't include anything you drink while exercising. Drink first thing in am, before eating a meal, after your meal, and last thing before bed. You may want to quit caffeine for a bit too, if you consume any. Also, "squatting" properly will relax your colon. I live in India so it's easy to do here. Last thing - exercise. You need to get up and walk around a lot to get things moving. Try to get in at least 20-30 mins activity each day.

i drink plenty of water. i pee almost TOO much. as for relaxing, ive tried deep breathing, raising my legs/feet... ive tried it all. it does eventually come out.. it just looks like sandpaper pellets. :( – tbonesteak Sep 9 at 19:42
Then'd I'd go with exercise and the first answer - fiber-less, sans veggies and if that doesn't work try adding fruit. Apples and pears. – KellyBoBelly Sep 10 at 1:38
just went to the dr yesterday and he asked me the same question.. then i reponded, "i pee a ton..." he said, it's not the same thing... drink MORE water!! – tbonesteak Sep 11 at 18:37
He's right. You should not only pee often, but it should be clear like water. Also, 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil first thing in the am works for some people. I like mine in tea, or I cook my omelette in it. And I would add more fruit like pears to your brekky or for snacks. – KellyBoBelly Sep 15 at 4:36

I have had similar problems. I read the book Fiber Menace which someone on here recommended. It has some interesting advice, but you can get it all on his website since he is really trying to sell his products. As a result of scrutinizing his products, I am taking probiotics, L-glutamine, and one tablespoon of citrucil in the morning. I'm also drinking Natural Calm which helps with stool softening. I hope some of this helps, as the hemorrhoidectomy is not a pleasant surgery!

I had similar issues so I reduced fiber (I am LC-VLC anyway) increased my coconut oil consumption and drink nothing but water - problem went away never to return. Just my personal experience.

thanks for the tip. did you just take spoonfuls of it or just put more in your food? – tbonesteak Sep 9 at 19:43

My problem was that I was in Germany, where the toilets are higher than in the US, so I got a case of 'roids.

For me, I've encountered some things that really clean me out, and save those for a 'natural' laxative experience. Two main ones are okra (1/2 pound cooked does the trick), and a a handful of carrots (or just eating 6-8 carrots over the course of a day). Also fruit pectins seem to move thins along too, so go nuts on a half pound of blueberries or something.

For the elimination part, see if you can get a milk crate or something that will allow you to put your feet up a foot or so. That way you can sit on the toilet with your knees higher than your hips, and kind of let your sphincter muscles relax and gently eliminate.

I started supplementing with Rutin (it's supposed to strengthen blood vessels), and it seems to work.

Also: avoid caffeine and alcohol. This had a huge effect for me.

i love me some coffee with coconut cream.. i will have to see if this is even possible. – tbonesteak Sep 9 at 19:46

When I get stopped up, I take a couple tabs of magnesium before bed. I'm usually good to go in the morning! I also found that a big glass of water before breakfast helps to get things moving, too.

Try changing the way you sit on the toilet. Some people do better with squatting. Some do better with regular sitting. My 'roids are virtually gone now that I've started sitting.
