If im understanding this correctly, the main objective (besides eating healthier) of a paleo diet is to make it so that you burn fat vs carbs for fuel. If i have this right, the only way to make that switch is to put your body into ketosis. From what ive read even the slightest carbs will keep you from going into ketosis. So, say you fail to go into ketosis while on palo/primal type diet, are you just making yourself unhealthy by consuming more fats which cannot be burned since you're not in ketosis?
From what i gather if you are eating (a "regular" diet) more carbs you're depleting your carb stores, which convert to enegy before you become hungry again?
If you go into ketosis, then have a day of carbing it up, you go back out of ketosis?
basically, if you're eating higher fats and not in ketosis are you just storing the fat and increasing your bodies fat percentage?

No, the main objective of the Paleo Diet is to eat for optimal health. It's my impression that there are plenty of us here who have never been overweight or metabolically deranged and who have no other health issues to deal with. There may be some advantage for being fat-burning-adapted for endurance exercise (this year's Western States 100 winner was a low carber and set a course record) but it doesn't appear to work equally for everyone. IMHO the bottom line is getting the most out of your time on this planet by optimizing your physical and mental health. What you eat happens to be critical for that.

Ketosis is a starvation protection mechanism (in particular a glucose starvation protection mechansism) but you don't have to starve yourself to get into it.
If you were unable to burn fat for fuel, you'd be dead.
Fat adaptation is another word for metabolic flexibility. It's also both a function of and a result of being aerobically fit. It is not necessarily dependent upon ketosis. However, depending on how carbohydrate intolerant you are, ketosis may be beneficial to you attaining metabolic flexibility. The easiest way to figure it out is to do a two-four-week test where you reduce carbohydrates from refined sources, dairy and fruit and eat only meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Something like the Whole 30 or similar. Then see if you feel better or not. If you feel better, you probably have a measure of carb intolerance and should limit your carbs to a level that doesn't bring back whatever negative things were cured by the test.
OP, one myth propagated by LC diet proponents is that a person has to be in ketosis to burn fat. In fact lipolysis occurs all the time without ketosis. LC diets work well as food avoidance strategies, providing that incentive some dieters need to stay away from many of the high calorie processed foods. That does not make LC paleo or ancestral. Our ancestors, not living in a world of food superabundance, ate what was available utilizing all metabolic pathways.
