Any thoughts on this probiotic drink, Symprove?

I know it's made from barley (boo!), but it's supposedly gluten free.

It was suggested by my (non-Paleo) dietitian and claims to be superior to probiotic capsules in delivering 'live, activated bacteria' - 'the next generation probiotic'. According to the manufacturer's website:

Unlike other everday products, Symprove works uniquely well because the bacteria are alive and ready to work (activated) from the moment Symprove is swallowed. Symprove does not trigger digestion as its Unique Delivery System (UDS™) protects our bacteria from acids as they travel through the stomach and gastrointestinal tract, and delivers them to targeted areas in the gut, where the bacteria begin to establish quickly.

Do these claims sound plausible or is it more BS than a bovine probiotic infusion?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm looking for a good probiotic in place of kefir and fermented foods as these are giving me major histamine problems at the moment. I'm tempted to try it but am slightly put off by the cost of the stuff, and the fact it's made from grains.

Thanks!

Sounds like ProViva, a Swedish probiotic I've encountered. I'm pretty sure it's not that new, but a lot of people use it with good results.

I'd say give it a shot, and if things get worse (inflammation, GI problems), then ditch it. I think the grains are only really there to give the bacteria a substrate to grow on, so they hit your GI in a live state, instead of dormant like in the pills.

Thanks for the advice. I tried it for a few days but it was making my symptoms worse. Not sure whether it was the bacteria themselves or the prebiotic stuff in the drink. Annoying as I had high hopes for it. – TJ Oct 10 at 19:13
