I had been playing with Paleo for a few weeks and kept putting it off because I am waiting to do blood tests on day 3 of my next cycle for PCOS, including a fasting glucose blood test. I didn't want a low-carb-ish diet to interfere with the results, since it would be kind of useful to know if I have PCOS or not...

I got sick of waiting for this cycle to end, so I started Robb Wolf's AI protocol yesterday. (I have hashimoto's, rheumatoid arthritis and chronic fatigue and I have been completely gluten free for 6 months).

How do I make sure that any insulin resistance I have now will still be around in 14 days time? While keeping pro-inflammatory foods to a minimum? I'm paranoid since my blood is notorious for showing normal results no matter what!

Update: another ovulation attempt failed :( so it's going to be at least three weeks now. Day 60 now, longest cycle since coming off pill at christmas (i've ovulated every time btw)

It took me months to even begin to turn the ship around on insulin resistance in my labs, I would doubt you could do it in just a couple of weeks. Also, your Hemoglobin A1c test should show roughly the last 3 months of your blood sugar regulation. – Happy Now Sep 10 at 7:50
Sounds like this Hba1c test is the one to get! I think i've been getting my tests confused. I've done a fasting insulin, this one is fasting glucose only. – cakie Sep 10 at 22:04
Fasting glucose tests can be tricky if you are really low carb and adapted to it. I'd definitely up the starchy roots until after the test, and make sure you eat a big mixed meal the night before the test. – Happy Now Sep 10 at 23:43

what is rob wolfs protocol? from personal evidence i would suggest going super low carb, ala a keto diet with an emphasis on fertility inducing healthy fats, omega threes and a good dose of vitamins. it has restored my periods to normal in two months, including ovulation, before that i had only had two in the last five years :)

Ask for the fbg and Hba1c now! They are not cycle dependent tests, but it will take 3days if "carbing up" to get an accurate insulin level, GTT, and probably fbg as well. And the Hba1c will also be affected.

In my experience, a ketogenic diet works VERY QUICKLY to normalize metabolism, so if you wait, results will be skewed.

Alternatively, you could ask for a course of progesterone to speed your cycle I hate progesterone withdrawal periods, but otherwise it might take 9-10 months before I cycle.

No. No it doesn't. It normalizes swings etc... but your A1C is not going to turn around in a few days or even a couple of weeks on any diet. Besides which going grain free will have more of an impact on A1C vs going low-carb. – Satchmo Sep 10 at 17:08
I know they aren't cycle dependent, but my endo gave me the tests, so it's not like i can go see her anytime! I may be able to get my gp to organise some separately when i see her next week... – cakie Sep 10 at 21:48

Please make sure you also get fasting insulin and HBA1C - fasting glucose is rather meaningless without these. And btw, my fasting glucose is higher on a low-carb diet. – baba Sep 11 at 5:56

Cakie, not sure why this keeps floating to the top, but did you ever have your tests? What result?

In addition to the fasting glucose/insulin and the A1C ask for a 2 hr post prandial glucose/insulin. Your fasting numbers may be normal for both, the 2 hour will give you a more definitive picture.
