I've fully adopted eating pure Paleo the past month, and it's something I'd like to continue. However, I was busy with other things in my life so I never managed to weigh myself. It turns out I lost about 15 pounds, which kind of scared me since I was already borderline underweight.

So I bought a digital scale and have been weighing and calculating my food the past few days. That serving of salmon that I thought was 400 calories [turns out it's more like 150]. All that asparagus I ate? Turns out that was about 30 calories. The "high calorie" avocado I was eating every morning [only 200 calories????]

I know nuts are very high calorie and I could eat those, but I've read on here and other places to be wary of their phytic acid. I got some walnuts because I read they had less phytic acid, but I'm still wary.

I don't know, does anyone else have this problem? The internet is telling me it's very dangerous for my body to not be at 1200 calories a day, and I can't figure out how to get to even 800.

I'm fine with being skinny, I just don't want my organs to shut down [or whatever happens].

Oh and I can't eat fruit because I have weird "hypoglycemia" [it's actually why I started eating Paleo, and it's fixed this problem...it's the only thing that does] issues.

If you are working out, then I suggest the suggestions below and the Robb Wolf CFFootball Omlete. However, if you aren't a big eater and are looking dense calories, grassfed beef, coconut anything, a second avocado with your dinner, eggs. Also, nuts in moderation are fine. Just don't overdo them or rely heavily on nut butters. However, a spoonful of nut butter is just fine (imo) on occasion to switch things up. Meat is good. – Tom R. Nov 27 2010 at 23:31

Don't be afraid of fat. Try, for example:

  • Fatty meat and potatoes (sweet, if possible).
  • Currys with coconut milk.
  • If you eat dairy
    • currys with heavy cream.
    • Cheese
    • Butter everywhere over your veggies.

This was today's post-workout food - the second helping:

Flanken-style short ribs and roasted potatoes

The question on how to get enough calories pops up now and then. This guy wanted 6,000 cal a day.

I think you can follow some of the reponses to get your caloric intake up.

that was me. Dex, you beat to posting that link. Ive given up packing that much in, and instead am getting in the 4-5000/day range. Ive started dunking things in coconut oil and mac nut oil during the day. Then just eating bigger servings of meat in the evening. Yknow, if youre used to a 12oz steak, have a pound instead kinda thing. I started doing 8 egg omelets instead of my former 4-5 egg ones, etc. – ben61820 Nov 27 2010 at 23:55

The best value I have seen is a quart of heavy whipping cream at Wal-Mart for about $2.75 – Dexter Nov 28 2010 at 0:07

If you're like me and have such a small appetite that trying to eat more meat or eggs is challenging, the best way to do it is to eat more fat. As per the suggestion above, slather butter on all of your vegetables, white fish, eggs and so on. Eat baked potatoes slathered with the same. Coconut oil apparently encourages weight loss, but cooking in gobs of that wouldn't go amiss either. Drink every drop of fat that slithers off your meat or oily fish. And, as others suggest, using cream or any other liquid calories is a sure fire way to bump up your intake, and hopefully help you regain balance.

Liquids with calories are easier to pound down. If you can find something tasty to blend in with coconut milk (that is not a fruit), you could get tons of calories that way. Potatoes with tons of butter, cheese and bacon bits are also great, if the starch does not trigger your hypo prob.

I have the same problem, I'm a hard gainer and when I first started paleo I wasn't eating enough calories. People were concerned for my health over how skinny I was.

In my experience gorging on fat didn't help me gain weight at all, but it does help get your calorie level up. You have to add some starchy carbs...sweet potatoes, acorn squash, pumpkin, etc to gain weight in my opinion, and lift weights. As long as your insulin levels are normal, the addition of more starchy carbs should be just fine. You just have to tinker a bit to see what works for you.

Good luck.

i agree. Im still in the midst of a selfexperiment but im on a Starting Strength program right now and am stuffing my face with about 5k calories/day. However im still getting them all from meat, fat, and salad veg. I still have not started on starchy carbs. I am not really putting on weight. About 1-2 pounds per week in the four weeks so far. Im keeping it up but i think i may have to start adding in some starch to get my body weight up. Once you are fatburning-adapted the body really and truly can handle megacaloric amounts of meat and fat and nonstarch veg without weight gain. – ben61820 Nov 28 2010 at 15:36
