I just made my first batch of bone broth. I simmered it for 24 hours and froze some, put some in the fridge and drank a little in a cup last night while it was still pretty hot. This morning, I had really bad diarrhea.
Is this a common occurrence with drinking bone broth for the first time? I didn't drink that much, maybe 4 oz. total. I thought maybe it was cleansing me, but then I thought that didn't make much sense. It was supposed to be healing for the gut. I don't really have any gastrointestinal issues ever so I thought this would just continue the healing process from 30 years on SAD. The broth smells just fine so I don't think it's bad. Any ideas would be helpful. I'm going to use it in a braised dish this afternoon, so I just don't want to put my family at risk. Braised short ribs is one of my favorite meals and I hope that this broth makes it even better!
It is 'cleansing' you, broth helps repair the gut and balance gut flora. Even if you had no noticeable gastrointestinal issues, it's likely you have imbalanced gut flora from your SAD years. What you're experiencing is most likely die-off, when bad bacteria die they release toxins that can cause diarrhoea and other symptoms. To heal properly you need to keep killing them though, deduce the broth so that the die-off isn't as bad and continue until the diarrhoea stops, then increase the broth slightly; repeat this pattern. After a while you should be able to drink plenty of broth fine as the gut has healed and gut flora is normalised.
It isn't the broth. I have tried to fit broth into my life, but it keeps doing this to me for some reason. You can probably get away with a little bit of it along with a meal. I thought it was the fat, because too much fat by itself can definitely cause diarrhea, but even after refrigerating the broth overnight and getting all the fat off of it I still had the problem.
I always had diarrhea after taking the broth. I have an idea what could be the cause. Bone always comes with small pieces of meat and bone marrow: last time I experimented taking the meat and bone marrow out after cooking it for several hours, and then leave the bone only to simmer up to 40 hours. It worked, no diarrhea.
Overcooking pieces of meat apparently causes allergic reaction in some way (bowels are my weak spot anyway), but the bones themselves are healthy.
